So today isn't my birthday, actually tuesday, but was able to do some fishing this morning before my shrimp boil shin dig. Got to my spot at sunrise and it was amazing!

I could see fish hitting the surface and as i got closer i could tell it was skipjack demolishing bait. Armed with a fly rod i went after some skipjack fun. They didnt really wanna play though. So i continued my kayak / wade searching for my first redfish on the fly . Finally came across 2 that were cruising by. Stripped out some line. Made my cast. Plopped that fly right in the path of em. They both turn and in an explosion of water and foam one enhales my fly. I strip set the hook and FISH ON!

While praying this fish doesn't come off, i fight it and eventually get it to hand. Beautiful 23 inch red and while a 23 inch red is hardly picture worthy, it is for me, because it was my first and personal best on the fly.

What better way to start a birthday weekend? If the rest of the weekend plans go to crap it already will be a birthday to remember! Just thought I'd share this excitement!

Nice red on the fly man. You forgot to take the obligatory cheesy picture with the fly rod in your mouth Laughing

Catching redfish on a fly is fantastic. Actually catching anything on a fly is loads of fun. Congrats on your first one and hope there's many many more.

This January I'm going to try to catch a 30 + inch northern pike on a fly in the Rio Grande in Northern New Mexico. I'm hope I'm as lucky as you were catching that red. Congrats again. Great pics!
