Well, I suppose the weather man was a little off again, because Sunday was nothing less than a 8mph wind day, and one FLAT surf!
GONE!
With intentions to stay until Tuesday morning, I hit the beach late to run baits out on the north end for a change.
I got em out in the dark. One big 25 lb Jack cut in three pieces.
And settled in north of Yarborough for what I knew was to come.
The run your lines over even though there is a virtual high road highway 150 feet wide express!
And the wait began.
And they just pouring north.
But the water was warmer as it has been, and the night was Succulent.
And I had service which was weird, so I listened to some good tunes and watched stars!
Bad moon rising....
But around 1030 my far south drop was cut off, and I know on what, someone mighta set out a little too close to the pipeline that runs from the tank battery offshore....
So I put that one up, and sat back down.
And what a sky. It made for one beautiful night.
And with the LED light craze continuing in full effect, they just kept POURING through camp.
They continued every hour heading north or heading south until 415am, when a Cadillac Escalade went by from somewhere way down south. And that was the last one. To all of you who camp on that end of the Island, may the Lord bless you, cuz' I just can't do it! Doggone! Who in tarnation needs to drive around all night with no rods on the truck and the windows up I just can't understand!
And something I haven't noticed before occurred at daylight. The pelicans came right over the dune from the night's nesting, and straight offshore to the shrimp boats done dragging for the night and dumping the bycatch!
Been a tough month to shark fish with all the shrimpers offshore I'll tell ya that!
Untouched, even by the speckled crabs.
So I decided to run south....
And the surf got horribly colder! Not a single bump on lures or a single fish on cut bait or shrimp!
Doggone freezing!!!
59 DEGREES!!
The coldwater upwelling was back in FULL FORCE. So I rigged up some ballyhoo and ribbonfish lures!
And out in 20 ft of water, the ribbon got knocked down by something that had scales as big as your palm! Five head shakes later, and that ole boy was GONE!!! Never would have expected his butt to be there in that cold water!
So I went to harass the fish with big lips, the Triggers.
And some others.
And some Cobia.
And with that, it was about 1500 hours and time to make a decision. Daddy and daughter day tomorrow it is! I headed on off and away from the cold water and the shrimpers. Caught a few undersize trout on the way off, but a LOT of them are way undersize this year, they really are. And it's tough to compete with dozens of offshore slabs and this cold water we keep experiencing.
If any of ya'll get ahold of a big fat Tiger soon, I wish you Godspeed! I for one am taking by butt back to work! There's always September!
Ya'll take care.

Yet another great report from 'down the sand'. Many Thanks.
Only one question.
"and the night was Succulent".
Is "Succulent" even a word??? If not, I submit it for the CF 'automatic spell-check thing-a-ma-bob' that Tyler oversees! "Succulent".... I LIKE IT !!!!! |
