Can someone point me in the right direction for a baitcast reel that I can learn with? I've used spinning reels my whole life and I am interested in broading my horizons. I know there is a learning curve but I am clueless as to if there is a good basic "learning" reel?

help a newbie out! Shocked

H20 mettle is like 30 bucks at Academy.
It's the go 2 beginner reel.
No magnetic cast control but the brakes work fine.

I have one you can have.

Pm me

Practice in yard with short casts. Find something similar in the weight you'll be using and use that . Set up a " target " to cast at . Learn to use your thumb
. Spool it with cheap mono at first because you will " backlash ". Mono is Easyer to clear bird nests then braid . You'll get it down then spool up with braid .an other thing I'll share is when you get ready to practice is adjust your breaks and tension nob .id suggest as a beginner 3 breaks in, 3 breaks out .
Tension you want to begin with is when your practice wait hits you want the spool to stop spinning ( this is where your thumb comes into play later on )
Then you start backing off the tension nob and breaks .
That's your basic baitcaster 101.youll get it down and love it.
I still use both though, the surf will eat a baitcaster so I mainly use spinners there and baitcaster in the bay but that's just me
Good luck man, questions , ask

For starters I'd go with a Daiwa Laguna.

It's about $60 at Academy but can be found for $30 online.

I think that you'd be far better off spending a little more and getting a real with regular centrifical brakes, AND magnetic cast controls. The latter is a HUGE advantage when casting into the wind, and IMHO, a huge advantage period when using a bait casting reel.

I cut my teeth on the old Ambassadeur 5000 back in the mid mid 1960's, bought at Oshman's. If that reel had the magnetic control on it......... Cripes, would have saved me maybe 100 hours that I could have been fishing rather than picking out BAD backlashes! Rolling Eyes

You might want to try a left hand retrieve.
1. Allows you to cast with your right and reel with your left, like a spinning reel.
2. It's easy to pick your rig out from others in the boat.
3. Nobody else wants to use it. Very Happy

I started with a Blue Daiwa Millionaire back in the 70's. Loved that reel. Dad was high class and had the Garcia 5000C. It had ball bearings and everything.

Now that I really agree with! I'm right handed but much prefer a left handed bait casting reel. The changing hands after the cast isn't that big of a deal for me, but I find it much more intutive and smooth to work top water baits, jigs or whatever else needs "user input" with the rod in my right hand. Doing it left handed (right handed reel) is something that I can do well, but it takes concentration. The other way is like falling off a log.... Laughing
