|
|
I got an email from a friend asking about tarpon being caught in Corpus Christi Bay. He said he recalled quite a few reports pretty commonly from April to September on this forum. I remembered a few from the Laguna Madre but not really anything other than big herring sized juveniles caught in cast nets in tributaries and sloughs near the Oso etc. Anyone know about this? Topdog15? Central Scrutinizer? Becky? _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

Nothing huge, but we generally get one or two annually from CCB within casting distance from Ocean drive about 3' long.

| I've never caught one in CC Bay but did get a 3' in the canals off Laguna Shores several years back. I posted about it here but that was before the message board crashed or got hacked and all the old posts were lost so I am not sure about when it happened. |

A quick search showed that a total of 34 tarpon have been officially collected with gill nets in CC Bay over the years (as well as an additional 38 from ULM). In both bay systems, the vast majority were seen in the fall sets (September, October, and November). Didn't look for sizes, but Tyler is right in that most are pretty small.
I can't think of many adults 'caught' in these bays. The occasional 3 footer may be around, but nothing that is targeted, like they are around the surf and jetties in the fall.
Art Morris used to maintain the Tarpon Observation Network. Here is a graphic of the angler records for CC Bay. Nearly everything is <3 footers, and for the most part, they are caught along the Portland Shoreline and into Nueces Bay.

does that include Nueces Bay gill net sets?
Tyler, "quite a few reports of tarpon from CC Bay on this board?" there might have been one or two, but his location is slightly off....there were a few reports a few years back, yes, but the reports were from farther west than CC bay....

Yes, all of CC, Oso, and Nueces. But the majority of the sets are in Cc and Nueces. |

You sure it wasn't ladyfish? That I could see. Especially on mirrolures. |

| I lost one years ago under the causeway to Portland while wadefishing. It looked to be over five feet in length, but all I got was an above-water headshake before it spooled my spinning reel. |

| I saw one last november near dagger island thrashing and busting bait on the shore for about 10 minutes. And my dad says he used to catch them wading south of the causeway near the bridge. I really want to target them this summer/fall if I can |

| I remember back when I was working with Jim Power, he used to tell of times back in the 60's of regularly catching tarpon while wading along Ocean Drive around the big bend where Weber intersects. He was one lean mean fishing machine! RIP Mr. Jim Power, my old friend.........cC |
