Just a reminder, DO NOT harvest egg bearing blue crabs. The surf is loaded with them. Will have a yellow or dark colored sponge looking thing on their bottom/backside. Its not legal. saw dozens today

I try to encourage folks to release all females crabs. Just because the sponge is not present doesn't mean the crab is not already impregnated.

I was just thinking about going crabbing in the surf tonight. Going to set traps off the dock as a back-up.

I also release all female crabs.

How do you do that? Like with those collapsible traps from a pier, those box traps you see in the laguna, or just with a net and a light and scoop 'em up when you see 'em? Never crabbed in the surf and am curious.

I'll usually set out a few lines with chicken, then go walk around with a light, net, and bucket. Come back every so often and check the lines, then move the operation up or down the beach a little.

Went to Bob Hall this morning to enjoy the beach a bit. I have never seen so many blue crabs, some big ones too. But it is gin clear with no waves.

Like most animals, just look between the legs! If the abdomen is thin and rocket shaped, it's a boy. Juvenile females' abdomen is triangular or pyramidal. The mature ladies sport a rounded semicircular abdomen which is where you find the eggs when they are present.

Female underside looks like the capitol building. Male underside more like the Washington monument.
