I have my surf reels backed with braid and topped with mono. Was wondering if there is a rule of thumb on how long the braid will last from just general deterioration as a backer. The braided line does get wet occasionally and I do not religiously wash my reels after every use.

I've never had a problem with it. I wouldn't consider replacing it unless its been on several years.

If no visible damage, no reason to replace.

UV and abrasion are the main enemies, but the line will tell you by fuzzing and/or turning a lighter color.

If it ain't broke, .........
