Hey guys, just a curiousity question. I have been looking at a small place just south of Benavides as a place to put some cattle as well as a hunting. There are a few big places around it but also the usual small places that shoot up everything. What do you think the chances of getting any kind of good deer there would be. Anyone from the area?

We had a family lease south of there by Realitos for years. It all depends on what your expectations are. We shot some decent 8 points over the years as well as smaller bucks but never anything over 130. This was in the 80s and early 90s so I cannot say if things have gotten better or worse. Some wonderful memories of that place. It is really dependent on your neighbors but with management being more prevalent these days it may be better than it used to be. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I'm around and about that area often. It can vary A LOT. A lot of the area with smaller rachitos (under 200 ac) has been shot to pieces. What'd I'd reccomend doing it to get out there and walk the property. Look for tracks and heavily used crossings under the fence. Also look and see in neighbors have blinds set up right on or close to fences.

if benavides is on the map, it's shot out. Also.. that has to be one of the worst places on the planet to run cattle on. You could probably lease 1/20 the acreage around refugio and accomplish the same grazing potential.

I hunt just south of there in Concepcion. It is pretty shot out. We do have a ton of quail, turkey and hogs this year. There is a decent crop of young deer this year they just never make it to their potential due to all the hunters shooting anything they can. We have quite a few leases around us with hunters who are into conservation, but there are a couple of day hunting leases around with no rules. There have been a couple of decent bucks taken over the last few years but it's always during the rut when they are on the move.

Duval county, especially around Benavides, is the worst county for deer hunting in South Texas. You must have 1,000 acres or a high fence to produce any kind of quality deer. I've hunted Duval, Live Oak, Jim Wells, Brooks, Bee and Atascosa and would not recommend a lease in Duval unless it was $2/acre and all you wanted to do is shoot doe and hogs.
