My buddy came down with his boat and was itching to get out on the water. We joked about how the weather has been awesome all week so it'll probably be snowing on Saturday. Anyway, we woke up and we were met by clear skies and little wind, we got to the bird island basin boat ramp at 7 o' clock hopeful to get on some nice fish. Wrong. Fishing was slow in our usual spots. Began fishing the King Ranch shoreline slowly making our way south. We had one trout in the box by 11:00. We always talk about going to Baffin, but all the horror stories we hear about how treacherous it is keeps us from venturing down there. Today was the day we decided! It was a heck of a boat ride, longer then both of us anticipated and much longer then it appears on the map. We took the intercostal alllllll the way down. The ride was smooth all the way down. On the way down we were both wondering how we would know we were there considering we had no cell service or GPS. Turns out you can't miss it, the mouth of Baffin was way bigger then what I imagined in my head as well as the bay itself. We started off anchored by the intercostal on the opposite side of Baffin. We started to finally catch some trout even if they just were dinks at least we were losing shrimp. Then a school of sheepshead moved through and we boated a few of those. They were fun to fight, but moved on quickly. We pulled anchor and moved across to the mouth and began to drift. I think we were both pretty nervous scanning the water for rocks instead of watching our corks, because we missed a few fish. Anyways, after a little while we began to catch fish again. We caught some dinks at first but as we drifted we started to catch mostly reds not very cast, but managed to catch one limit the biggest going 27". It was a great time on the water. We managed to take some fish home and had a great adventure. Sorry for the long read guys.
Question: We noticed at BIB the water was extremely clear we could see the bottom even if we were fishing in 5 foot of water, but at Baffin we were fishing in probably 3-4 foot and we were having trouble seeing the bottom. Does it always stay murky? _________________ I'm here to chew bubble gum and fish...and I'm all out of bubble gum. |

Thanks for the info shallowsport. We noticed the further we drifted in the more rock beds we saw. Do the rocks get bigger the further in you go? Also we noticed the depth never really changed, is it pretty consistent? _________________ I'm here to chew bubble gum and fish...and I'm all out of bubble gum. |

| Nice trip.... You can see the rocks on Google Earth. The high tides can trick people in to thinking that running thru certain areas is ok. Don't be fooled. I saw a guy hit one at high speed in his go-fast boat in front of my cabin. |

Goggle Earth is an excellent resource and so is a good map. The rock formations come in all sizes. There are many place that you will be over your head if you're on the bottom yet knee deep or less if you're on top of the rocks.
In the winter those rocks hold heat so it makes for a great place to fish. Rocks and mud bottoms hold heat so those are target areas.
If you lay tracks in a low tide you can be more certain of being able to run those areas on a consistent basis. _________________ "I do hunt and I do fish and I do not apologize to anyone that I hunt and fish." - Norman Schwarzkopf |

Ouch... i've seen pics where there used to be an outboard on the back of a boat... it was gone.
Like above look at the historical aerials on Google Earth the program... you may have to google or look for a you tube to learn how to use that function...it's pretty simple. But very helpful. They are not just on the west side of the channel either, there are some on the east side as well. Study a map and google earth, maybe even go with a guide (split it with a couple of buddies). There are lots of fish in there...wait did I say that just learn your way around and go have fun.

Thanks for all the great advice guys! I will definitely use it next time. I see your point about Google Earth. I talked to a fisherman the other day that said most guys that fish down there fish with lures mostly. Any particular reason or was that false? _________________ I'm here to chew bubble gum and fish...and I'm all out of bubble gum. |
