Left Tuesday morning with a group of 12 and decided to head to Gunnison. Arrived at 545 PM not seeing any jumpers or bait, and was getting a little worried. First drift we got 2 YFT and a handful of BFT to chunk. Began the second drift, already planning on making the run to India, and then they all showed up at once. second drift yielded 13 YFT, almost all on yummies. Had 25 in the box by 11 PM, we would knock out our limit quick (36) and be able to run to the Flower Gardens to troll all day and see if any wahoo have showed up early. then of course the bite died.

Was looking down trying to figure out what happened when a very large mako swam up. Aha, that's what happened to the bite. Anyway the mako was very aggressive and let me screw up the hook set several times but kept coming back for more (all while still eating peoples BFT off their jigs while I was re tying a leader) The funniest thing was my third hook set where my shark hook caught the BFT that was in its mouth and pulled it out still kicking jig and all!!!, theres a way to get a jig back from the taxman. Anyway, finally got a hookset and had it to the boat in about 3 minutes. Attempted an ill advised gaffshot and got owned very quickly costing us 2 gaffs and having 3 others pulled from our hands. Picked our 3 gaffs up while the fish was now actually being fought. He fought her for about 30 more minutes and she laid vertically against the boat like she was dead. Nope, the next gaff attempt shattered the three remaining gaffs, but luckily the bamboo didn't separate and we were able to get head and tail ropes on. about an hour later had her boated boxed and measured! She taped out at 630# but only weighed 468# on the scale 2 mornings later.

Went back to fishing and, while we were seeing YFT, didn't have another bite until 5 am when a short flurry produced 4 more, then we got went 2 for 7 on the morning troll.

Slow trolled back to Nancen then trolled until dark for one more YFT, and only got one for 3 drifts at sunset. what a change after Saturday night there! Headed for Boomvang to try a drift before heading home, and a drift was all we needed. we only needed 3 more fish for a limit and immediately hooked 8. Picked the three that looked the best and headed home.

The front didn't hit us until 415AM this morning and we were already in 130 ft of water, so we didn't get to much seas from it.

Great trip Great People cant wait to go again. We cancelled our fri 13 trip due to weather but opened one up for Fri Nov 20. If you are interested call Deep Sea Headquarters at 361-749-5597

Great going James. Gunnison has been hot for you and the Pelican. I think that's great. there are some old familiar faces in this pic that I have shared the rail with on many occasions.
