Hey everyone! My 68 year old father and I are planing a fishing trip down there this Friday and was wondering if the red tide will affect the fishing or conditions of fishing the upper Laguna this weekend? Wouldn't want to have a money wasted trip. He really wants to take his boat down there. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Planning on launching either from Bluffs or BIB. We were initially planning to head down PINs at first but now seems like the boat is our only other option. Thanks.

should be fine far as the fishing BIB would be the best sure bet this weekend to avoid the red tide although you still might get the itchy eyes from the wind off the gulf

So as of today, did anyone fish the Laguna bay around the King ranch shoreline today? Was wandering if my father and I need to fish elsewhere this Friday and Saturday. Again we were planning on heading to BIB and fishing the KRS. Would not want my father to have a miserable fishing trip breathing in those red tide aerosols. Thanks.

I don't want to alarm you, but the red tide effects are produced by a neurotoxin...that's what kills the fish and can kill coyotes and dogs and such that eat the fish. So, the effects can be much more than just an allergic reaction. I have a friend who in her late 60s ended up in the hospital after being exposed to the red tide aerosol effects....heart problems. I can't say for sure that the red tide caused the health problems... could have been a coincidence..... And, it occurred years ago when the red tide was so bad that the foam in the waves was actually tinted pink.

Just thought you'd like to know since you mentioned bringing your 68 year old father.

We had a fisherman caster friend in from Wales in 2009 who was exposed to the red tide and he was sick for over a year with some serious respiratory issues and he was about 49 years old at the time.

Thank for the info everyone. Guess we will fish the Arkansas pass and rock port area. Definitely don't want any of that happening to any of us from being exposed all day while fishing. Have a good one.

I fished that general area today and there were no problems. Doesn't mean it won't happen over the weekend

Any red tide effects noticed in the Billings flats area? Itching to yak the flats and spoils north of the launch this morning.

Parked just east of Billings ramp @ 0900, hopped out of the truck for a few minutes to sample the air and no RT aerosol detected. Launched my Propel @ 0915 and burned North for 1 mile to my go-to spoil passes. Water looks real good but no keepers to brag about. Saw a few dead mullet during the paddle up and back and even more on the spoil eastern shorelines - likely washed in via Packery channel. Staked on the eastern edge of ICW and caught some dink trout, needle gar and skipjack. Out of the water by 1:30, disappointed that I didn't come across schooling reds.

Lot of dead fish floating when you're coming back from the island around the humble channel...
