So yesterday I'm gearing up to fish the cuts along corpus christi pass on the bay side inside Mustang Island State Park. Its about 6:30 am and 2 young men pull up beside me and ask if it would bother me if they teal hunted. I said go for it. That will be exciting to watch. Well, I'm wading around picking up a few trout/drum here and there. Every now and then a small flock of teal would fly by in the distance. They'd pop a couple of shots and run out there and pick it up. They were probably 17-19 years of age. Reminded me of myself as a young man duckhunting.
Anyway I was under the impression you could not take firearms into the park property. I went to the park office and asked and the lady at the office didn't know. She did say however there are designated areas for hunting as long as you have permits. So that got me all excited.
My question now is, can a person with permits go up into the state park along the bay side and hunt teal or ducks with a shotgun along the water's esge? Would love to know this. |

TPWD allows hunting in certain areas of state parks, WITH PERMITS...
some under-used areas if you check around...
maybe some walk-in areas in Mustang...
don't forget regular duck season, too...
but I think bay waters are free-for-all...
now I'll defer to the local duckmen who are way more on top of this...
oh one other thing....
I'd not take Grampa's Purdy, Westly Richards, William's and Evan's or a Holland and Holland
to shoot salt ducks...
orange 870's do just fine... _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

| Okay, I just spoke with a park official who said regular hunts are not allowed within the state park if your "feet" are on land. However if your feet are in the water you are legal. He said if you access your hunting spot by boat and stay in the water you're clear. If you access the water by walking on the land and are carrying a firearm you're not legal. Mind you he was laughing at the rules and said hunting is allowed in certain areas for special hunts, however the opening of teal isn't considered a special hunt. |
