I just can't seem to justify in my head spending an extra $9K for 3' of length and 35HP on the motor. Thoughts?

Boats and tractors: no matter how much you buy, there will always be days when you wish you had more.

My buddy has a 21' and I like it. But I don't usually carry a lot of people with me so I'm thinking an 18' should be fine. Probably fishing 2 to 3 people. Taking it out 1 to 2 times a week if I'm lucky.

Just remember, you can't remodel and add on once you buy the smaller one.

We had two 21'ers with 150s and an 18'er with a 115 at my old job. The 21s ran much better in my opinion. Maybe the 18 wasn't propped right or something but it just sat there. No one wanted to run it.

21s offer a much more comfortable ride because they are heavier, A LOT more deck space (it's not just the length), and the 21s we had actually got up shallower.

In my opinion a 21 hands down. The only reason to go with the 18 is price, boat storage space ( it may fit in a garage), or maybe if you do a lot of towing it on the highway. It is smaller and lighter. As far as actual fishing and boating goes, the 21, no question.

Riding in both may be a good idea though cause everyone's opinion is different.

Good info. Thanks! And I need to work where you were. Sounds like a fun job running Majeks for work.

The 18 and 21 are different animals. The 21 runs shallower and is a better ride. If you are set on an RFL then you want the 21, if you are set on the 18 ft range then I would look at a shallowsport or one of the smaller cats.

I have the 18 rfl it's enough for me with the 115. 21 will just burn more fuel and there is plenty of fuel being burned out there. Don't expect it to ride like a vee hull.....but it will go where they can't go.

I'd get a 21 no questions asked. I have an 18', my Dad has a 21'. The extra room is extremely nice, and the ride/handling is much better. The 21 has a Yamaha 150 TRP on it, 18 has a Johnson 120 on it and the 21 will run circles around the 18 on holeshot, top end, as well as fuel economy. A run that takes 50 gallons on the 18 can be done on the 21 for roughly 30.. Granted the motor technology is drasitcally different between the 2 motors, I still think a 21 is an all around better boat.

Really depends upon your needs, but the planing surface of the 21 far exceeds that of the 18 (even thought the 18 performs very well in shallow water). I've had a 15' Majek scooter for years that is terrific, but not nearly as good as the 21 because of planing surface. The 18 can be a terrific boat, depending upon your needs and fishing style.
