I've been an inshore wade fisherman my whole life and a buddy of mine wants me to go wirh him out past the 3rd gut in a kayak. He doesnt want to go to the rigs, only drift in open water but stay somewhat closer to land. I really don't know what to fish for or how deep it is out there. Any help would be appreciated.
I've seen guys on here catching all types of fish. I have tackle for larger game fish. What would be ya'll's expectations? |

I do this a lot, far more often than rig trips.
Paddle out beyond the breakers and either troll a plug or anchor and toss out bait. Not much difference than fishing inshore really. I usually just use a pier-sized baitcaster on a short rod, Penn 109, Ambassador, etc) Make sure the rod is long enough to clear the bow if a fish goes under you.
Make a decision now what you are going to do if you hook a large shark. A 8' shark beside the boat is not really time to "wing it".
I like trolling plugs, get some exercise and pick up a jack at the same time. The wife drops me off and then moves a few miles down the beach and sets up camp.
Depth is not really a concern, 10-12'. Your best bet is the back of the last bar, no need to go much further unless you are chasing schools of smacks and such.
When you go thru the surf line stow your rods with bungees and put all the hooks away. Practice your re-entry skills first. There are a couple of videos on Youtube about coming back thru the surf line that would be helpful. |
