Occasionally, I go to the lighthouse.tamucc.edu site to get wind speed, water temp, primary water level, etc, but not today! You can find information for Bob Hall Pier, but not for Packery Channel and Bird Island anymore, possible others as well. The message that displays is:

The maintenance and operation of the Texas Coastal Ocean Observation Network has not been funded since August 31, 2014. Any inquiries should be directed to the Texas General Land Office.

We very much regret the inconvenience that has caused you.

We appreciate your interest in TCOON

Too bad the checkout scanner station can't display a similar message when a Lone Star card gets swiped.... Cool

I have been a long time user of the TCOON site which is now inoperable, mainly for the water levels and tidal flow information. Does anyone have any ideas who we may contact about this problem. It seems a shame to have the weather stations up and down the coast and not have them working.

there is a contact on the website (his picture shows up on the TCOON homepage).....

unfortunately, I'm not sure there's anything that could be done....

ALTHOUGH.....I used to work for TCOON, and I'm considering volunteering (if that's an option) because I need me some Packery Channel Station info as well...

Call the TGLO and complain. Not sure what good it'll do but it's worth a shot.

I'm in the middle of a project at work that relies on their stations and the data they generate. And I'm sure there are others in the same boat.

The GLO is run by the Texas Land Commissioner, so being an elected official one would think he is sensitive to input from the public.

I contacted TCOON and they referred me to the GLO web page that has a complaint tab on it:

http://www.glo.texas.gov/cf/comments/index.cfm

This is what I got back:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your communication to the General Land Office (GLO) regarding the available TCOON data at http://www.cbi.tamucc.edu/TCOON/. The GLO understands the importance of this data, and is committed to securing the funding for the operation and maintenance of these stations. The GLO is currently working with several state agencies on a solution. The GLO, United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Texas Water Development Board and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have held several meetings to finalize a path forward for the full operation of the TCOON in the near future.

Below is a list of additional websites you may want to visit to determine if the station or data you need is available.

http://data.gcoos.org/
http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/stations.html?type=Water+Levels - Texas

The GLO will continue to work with our partners to make sure the entire TCOON network is operational, while ensuring transparency and accountability of the public funds utilized for the TCOON contract.

Please feel free to contact my office if we can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,
Katy

Fear not! There are meetings being held between state and federal agencies. That should clear it up soon...

Thanks Reba. I just checked and it's still broken. I'll send a message shortly.

There is ALWAYS funding for food stamps, it's just a temporary way to support the out of work folks ~

With all the meetings, and brew haha, the cost of that alone could perhaps fund the part of the TCOON we are interested in for years.
