I recently spent a few days on Mustang. no problems.. At Matagorda,, wow. spent more time towing than fishing. Even broke a tow strap. 9000 # rated. My wife was pissed for me helping all those suckers, but thats who I am.

i dont charge, but if i'm offered some cash i'll accept it,the most ive ever been paid is fifty dollars by a couple of phd scientists who were stuck in their ford fiesta south of the 4x4 sign. i had to pull them a mile, i dont know how they made so far. but that all changes when i see a family stuck especially with kids ands its hot outside, getting stuck can ruin a family outting, with tempers flaring and crying kids, i'll pull them out and order them to have a fun and great day and will not accept any cash, why? because ive been there in the same situation.and if they are outa towners i give them a little advise on where and how to drive because they dont know. and it is a good feeling inside when you do a good deed. right?ims

No charge - just help me get you hooked up.

This is a perfect example of why All BEACHES must remain open to the public 24-7. One of the lame arguements last fall was that there were 60+ miles of beach for people to drive on. Access, as we know, can be very limited.

I dont know for sure, but I dont think it is legal to charge for pulling them out. Trash heap and some others that are up on the city politics will know much more than me but I have always heard it is illegal. I dont charge nor have I accepted monies for pulling someone out. Hell I dug a guy out o n the beach two years ago. he was from Wisconsin and stuck his new Stang to the axles. Had to dig it seemed like to China to get him out. I did not accept money then. This may be something someone can check on and get a ruling on though.

Have pulled out quite a few people at no charge and never a regret. I have also refused to pull out 2 vehicles, both 2wd and far south of the "sign". One drunk woke me up while I was sleeping in my camper shell at about 2 in the morning. He said, and I quote, "You HAVE to pull me out, I'm supposed to meet some friends further south". I asked him if he was in danger from the tide and when he said no I told him I'd come look for him in 3 or 4 hours after I woke up and had my coffee. He was gone when I woke up about 5:30. The other guy had the same attitude that I HAD to pull him out. If either guy had asked nicely I would have helped them at no charge.

I will usually help someone out if they need it, if they offer to pay me then it depends on my mood. I usually decline to take it. However it is not charging if the money is offered by the stranded party as them helping you out for helping them out.

Been reading this site for a while and just registered the other day. First post. Hi all.

Anyhow, I have been on both sides of the coin here. I have never passed up a vehicle that is stuck (unless in the surf) cause I know how bad it sucks. I carry two e-tools in the truck when going down PINS and will provide to my "customer" if they need one and depending on how tired\sunburnt I am, I will usually help dig. Figure the faster I can get them out the more time can be spent fishing. I never pull a vehicle without digging some first to reduce as much strain on my tranny as I can. I think all these tranny probs are from people trying to yank vehicles buried to the frame out of the sand without digging a path first. I'll take sore muscles over tranny rebuild anyday cause like most say, they won't help you pay for a rebuild but a cold beer does wonders for sore arms.

Never heard the City of CC had such a restriction. It may be an "urban legend" spawned by the towing companies to chase away the competition. Even if it were so, it wouldn't apply outside City jurisdiction.

I know conditions lately have led to a ton of stuck vehicles, and hence beaucoup unstickings. Aside from those conditions, is there a trend here that needs to be addressed before somebody gets killed and in over-reaction they either prohibit Good Samaritan towing or even close beaches to all vehicles?

Some, like Cap'n Billy and myself, rarely get stuck and have never needed assistance to get unstuck. Don't know exactly how to explain it. My little Blazer floats like a cork on its over-sized street tread tires, and although his vehicle is twice as heavy, the Cap'n can read and drive the beach better than anyone. What my Blazer can't do, of course, is pull anything else out of the sand, and now with my advanced lumbar disc disease I've even quit offering to get out and push a stuckee. What we need here are a set of magic formulae to keep folks from getting stuck in the first place.

We've seen a lot of ideas posted lately on how to get unstuck. Any ideas, short of all driving Blazers, cloning the Cap'n, or just staying home, on how not to get stuck in the first place?

for what it's worth- i was fortunate enough to have my father-in-law and his friends teach me the "ropes" if you will. he moved here from chicago and frequented the sand dunes in michigan, used to run a 440 4x4 ramcharger that would eat corvettes alive. after a few trips with him down to pins following in my truck, i learned how to read the beach and sand and tricks for driving in the stuff. the best i have found is being aware of where you are driving and pay attention to what you are doing. now my brother-in-law and myself having benefitted from wayne's experience can run the beach without incident. one important lesson he taught me was to properly set your truck up for sand, which is completely different from mud and rock.

You enter PINS, at the ranger shack they have a big sign hanging that says 4wd only, you get to the end of the hardtop and before you go on the beach there is another sign that says 4wd only. If I drive by you and you are stuck in a 2wd don't expect me to stop. Best lessons in life are learned when they are hard. To me it is like telling a drug addict not to spend their money on drugs, they do and ask you for more and you give it to them, they spend it on more drugs and you give them some more and tell them not to but they do it anyway. Or like the person who tries to drive across a flooded road when the water is 3 feet deep amd moving 30 mph.

I was down fathers day weekend camped in the baja popup at the first two hundred yards. I pulled out lots of folx and never got offered a penny. I wouldn't take the money anyway, I got stuck alot in the mud as a teenager and I'm sure i'll get stuck when I'm an old fart. The last person I pulled out tore up my tow strap and all I got was a thank you, a $20 would have been alot better.

About 15 years ago, I had a friend who offset college expenses by pulling cars out of the sand on weekends on the Galveston side of the San Luis Pass Bridge. Most week ends he would make $120 - $180.

I rarely accept money for pulling people out, however about 2 years ago we were fishing south of BHP for an evening fix when we came upon some stuck college kids (not that I am that much older myself!). They needed a yank to pull out their stuck car. I pulled up, tied up a tow strap and gave it a tug. No problem to pull them out. They offered to pay me but I went ahead and declined. As I was driving away a girl shouted to me. When I turned she flashed me her b**bies. Ahhh...payment accepted!!

Life is good ain't it.
