It seems that the surf water conditions the past few days have been ideal, but the trout bite during the day not so much. In another thread, someone mentioned that the trout are probably feeding at night under a full moon.

I know that many folks fish at night, but I was wondering if anyone fishes the surf at night using the same tactics as during the day, such as casting topwaters, Mirrolures, soft plastics, etc, in the darkness under a bright moon for night feeding trout? If so, what lure choices and colors would be best? Thanks.

I've never fished the surf at night but I have kayaked out to Pita and drifted all the way back under a full moon. I've had luck throwing a black top dogs. & I also painted a gold spoon black and had luck on it. Seems like the silhouette under the moon would work that way. Like I said don't know about the surf but it is worth a try.

My surf fishing at night always involves bait and long rods, never thought about tossing lures.
Something noisy might work, like a rattling jighead. They are good for striper in freshwater at night.

Also, wading the surf at night give me the creeps. Shocked

Like mentioned, a black or black chartreuse topwater can be productive.

The bite is there, but its creepy something fierce after knee deep if you are bare legged. A clumbsy whiting will get you airborn. Try it for your self before you judge me. Laughing

I swear I had a 12 foot hammerhead glide down my leg while wade fishing the surf one night.

Or maybe like rawlbay mentioned, it was a clumsy whiting. I'll never know for sure. Very Happy

The biggest/best overall trout catching I've ever seen was many nights in a row on BHP. This was in the old days when the pier was wood and had lights only ever so often, and the lights may have been a factor. Still, not a trout to be seen until well after dark. Then, and ONLY IF you had live shrimp and were under the light closest to the first gut, it was one monster tout after another for hours at a time, with all fish well into the 20's!!! shock:

This was in the summer, and the bite was only on the up current side. Down current was DEAD! Embarassed

Yes it was on a pier and under lights, but night time was the right time, and very darn close to the first bar.......

I catch Trout and reds at night on the South Jetty by the green buoy and on the surf side at the end at night. I also fish close to street lights near the channel. Green with glitter plastics work best and white Gulp shrimp.
the water needs to be clear or green.

We actually did really good during the day, caught most of our trout and reds from about 0945 to 1100 oN friday. We had to move alot and fished the up curent sides of the pinches in the wade gut. All of our fish were caught in probably no more than knee deep. Believe it or not we were able to site cast to some of the trout in the surf over the weekend
