|
|
| So I've been looking into braided line. One of my fellow fishing brothers had a spool on his reel, 20lb looking thin like 6lb. I hear it has no stretch, but can get wind knots??? I do surf to backyard fishing and was curious if it would maybe be an advantage for me. I use a baitcaster with the rest of the family using spinning reels. |

Comes down to personal preference. Best way to find out if you will like it is to put some on and fish it. For starters 20 or 30 lb Power Pro for a baitcaster. Most of my buddies fish nothing but braid. I do know some that will not give up mono. I was recently thinking about putting mono back on one of my reels just cause. _________________ kick your shoes off and cast a line |

I have made the switch to braid 4-5 yes ago. I prefer the Fins windtamer line in 10#. I put a 20# Seagar leader and has been good to me. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

| Windtamer for sure. I personally think I catch a lot more fish on braid. You can feel a fish burp on your lure with braid as opposed to mono. |

| I used 10# mono for years without a failure and resisted going to braid, but gave in to eliminate the problems with water absorption and UV effect on mono. I use Sufix 832, 30# with a 12-20 fluorocarbon leader on casting reels. The larger line allows easier removal of backlashes. When I changed my wife over to braid on her spinning reels she had a problem with wind knots until we learned the cause of the problem was her drag was too loose, thus letting the line twist. Since correcting the problem with the loose drag she has not had wind knots. Enjoy! |

I find this odd, as the main benefit of braid over mono on a spinner is the lack of memory. Twisted or not, the line comes off the reel the same way., for the simple reason that braid has no memory. I've been using braid and nothing else since it first hit the market decades ago, and I would NEVER go back! Being forced to use mono on the party boats in Destin REALLY sucks when compared to the braid that I usually use.
In my experience with braid, and that's a lot: "wind knots" (a really misleading name) come from reeling the line in with very little tension. Sometimes this is tough to avoid, like when walking the dog with top waters, when free lining live bait or using soft plastics with no weight and reeling very slow. Still, an occasional SNAFU and retie is far better to me than having the high memory, stiff mono constantly jump off the spool, like a Slinky on steroids!!!! And I might add, the old wives tale about letting the line out behind a boat to get the twist out is pure BS..... It does remove lots of twist, but the very nature of a spinning reel and how it stores line means that as you reel back in you are TWISTING the line! That's why it's so important to wind new mono on the spool by making sure that it comes off the factory spool in the same rotation that it winds onto the reel, and even then, it will only stay twist free until such time as the drag is pulled out..... Which leads back to what you were saying about the drag being too loose. But, this is with mono, not braid. _________________ Dave

I'm not sure what is more twisted Dave, your mind or your line? |

I agree with this. I was having such a big problem with wind knots using PowerPro braid on my Penn Battle spinning reel casting topwaters and other lures that I went back to mono. Then I found the same problem with mono. I guess you just have to pick your poison. Dealing with wind knots with spinning reels, or an occasional birds nest with bait casters.
Currently, I am using Trilene XL, or Ande mono just because its much cheaper, but braid does have a lot of upside. |

| Addition to llbb post. What I've seen happening with some of my friends fishing with braid is that they get will get a lot of loose loops creating "windknots" and birds nests, and I wont. What I do is just before my lure hits the water I reach out with my index finger and stop the line from coming off reel. This allows the line to go on the reel with more tension than if the line continues off the spool and then flipping the bail over. That often creates loose line around the spool therefore lots of line coming off on the next cast creating birds nest and windknots. |

I'm sure we can talk endlessly about line, rods and reels. I have a little extra time on this most excellent Friday so...
First a word about wind knots. Correct me if I'm wrong but a true wind knot refers to a overhand knot forming in a leader while making poor casts with a fly rod causing tailing loops resulting in wind knots. I think somewhere the term translated over to conventional gear to be associated with line twist.
Spinners are little twisted sisters. They twist line in several ways and when there is enough twist and a little slack it will make a mess called a cluster f*** regardless if you are using braid or mono. As said before, by reeling with a loose drag thereby revolving the rotor and not gaining line you are directly twisting the line. Another common way is to cast something that spins through the air. You have to watch your lure or what have you as it is propelled to the hinterland. It is real easy to see a shrimptail helicopter through the air. This can be corrected by changing your cast. Line will also twist while reeling in something that is spinning like the infamous gold spoon. As Zia said, that little loop that forms on the spool is where it will all blowup. All of this can be minimized one way or another, if not everyone would just throw that sister away.
Now that I got that off my chest, and I'm sure there will be a rebuttal, a word about Windtamer. I use it. It is stiffer which helps in how it comes off the reel and is advertised to have less air drag or something like that for better flight. Whatever physics, it works. I mentioned PP before as a starter because I thought Fins was more expensive. I do question the pink versions. Yes, red is absorbed first in water and there is noticeable loss of red at five feet. How does that make the line invisible on the flats? I'm going with green and a long leader.
Mono...it's tried and true. Holds memory, cheep to replace, easy to tie knots that hold, will get nicks enough to compromise strength, absorbs water and stretches. Braid undeniably transmits better feel. When a good fish hits and runs which will perform better? The mono diehards will say the stretch helps absorb shock and the braid guys say fish with a lighter drag. Back to my very first comment; it is a personal preference. I'll add this; the feel you get with braid tends to overshadow all the other factors. _________________ kick your shoes off and cast a line |

I've been using Maxima ultragreen since... the 1980's! It's all I have and I love the stuff! I have one conventional reel for bottom fishing (Penn SQL20LW) and everything else is Penn SS spinning reels.
I used to get "wind knots" with my fly rods until I learned how to form tight loops.
Tried to learn myself how to cast the one ABU Garcia 5000 AL that I bought in the 80's, and all it did was freak me out, so, I never used it and it is standing in the corner on a rod and looks, brand new...

Ironmanstan sticks with 8lb Stren and a 14lb fc leader. Don't over fill your spinning reels it will help on those " twisted sisters" I rarely get them. Like the man said it's personal preference. I stick with what works for me. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |
