| I have been wade fishing the surf around packery and whitecap beach. We have been using live shrimp and last time croakers. All we have caught is a bunch of lady fish and some sheephead. Any advice on where to fish where we can catch some trout instead of lady fish. Thanks |

Frankly, it is just hit or miss a good deal of the time. If at all possible, you need to try to find schools of small fish that trout feed upon, such as menhaden, shad, finger mullet, etc being active in the surf. You also might look for diving birds or pelicans actively feeding as you drive down the beach. The thing about trout is they travel in schools, and if the bait fish that they feed upon is not present, they tend to just pass through if they show up at all. Ya just gotta be where they is. |

If You like using live shrimp try the jetties. Try right at the edge of the rocks and work your way around the jetty until you find them. Good luck. |

100% agree. If you could see whats at the base of the jetties, you would be amazed at the "highway" of trout and reds that cruise up and down that area. I can't spear them (gamefish), but I can tell you they are there, and typically NOT out where I see a lot of folks casting as far as humanly possible!!!!  |

I know Dat's right! The fish are in or darn close to the rocks, pilings, etc.
99% of those fishing such areas never know, because they continue casting away from the cover. After all, "I DON'T want to get snagged!!!!!  I don't need to dive this jetty or that to know this; As long as I can feel the rocks, I catch fish. Cast much further away and I'm into hardheads, pinfish and such.
Not saying that I wouldn't like to do some jetty diving, on the contrary. Alas, I have very limited opportunities!!!

If you can figure out where the sanbars end or start from the beach depending on the tide that would be a good place to start. Look on youtube of how to read the surf and there is some good videos on there.

| Went to the surf today with shrimp and a cork. Mullet coming thru on a regular basis. Still just a bunch of lady fish. Could have caught one every cast. Moved to south packery jetties caught one little trout up close to the beach. Not much else worth talking about. Didn't see any birds working and fished in one of the places we found from reading the surf. thanks for the advice. |
