Can anyone give me advice on what is the best way to catch or trap piggy perch? Question

I carry a tiny cheap Shakespeare open faced spinning rod and reel with 4# test mono. I use it to catch bait with a tiny hook w/ about 1/4" gap baited with a tiny piece of pink shrimp fish bite. Will catch pinfish, pigfish, little croaker, little whiting, etc with ease. You can also use a Sabiki rig that is equipped with multiple tiny jigs with the spinning combo.

I live waterfront one of the canals. Kids like to fish from the back dock and catch Perch. As a matter of fact, that's usually all they catch. Sometimes we save the smaller perch, whether Piggy or Pin, and use them as Red Snapper bait.

Try around a dock, rocks or bulkhead. Small pole with about a 1/4 ounce weight and the smallest hook you have. Then take a tiny piece of shrimp and put it on the hook. It should be just enough to cover the tip of the hook and the barb. If you feel the piece is too small, it is just right. You want to make it where they can only bite where the tip of the hook is to keep them from ripping the bait off.

Every Easter we have a grand kids pin perch fishing contest of my dock. I rig a cane pole up with the smallest hook possible and just a little piece of fish bites. Kids catch perch all day long.I even made an official perche ruler to measure them on. Kids think it's the Third Coast fishing tournament

One year my grandson about 7 at the time asked me, he said "grandpa, why don't we hang up my Perch on the hooks the way you hang your catch?"

So, I took about a half dozen of the small Perch he caught and I hooked them above the fish cleaning table so that he could hold his fishing rod and stand next to his catch! That made him real proud.

Strangely, I find that I get satisfaction from snagging the little varmints on ultralight tackle trying to catch them for bait. Maybe not like hooking and fighting a bull red, but still, I have fun doing it. I can relate to those kids. Cool
