We'll the struggle is reel "pun intended" I was DYING to get out and run some baits. It all started at the packery jetty in good ol CC Texas first thing on 3/23. This was a bait fishing mission but we brought a 6/0 just incase. We were having trouble catching sheepshead but the older gentlemen with live shrimp were killing them! So they gave us one once they both had there limit and kept fishing for bigger ones. We cut him in half and paddled him out about 400 yds off the end of the jetty. Continued fishing for bait and caught one big sheepshead and a guy gave us a large jack.
After lunch me, my wife and my little 2 year old girl headed to PINS. We drove down somewhere between the 10 and 15 mile markers. The driving was great the water was green and flat, there was bait in all of the guts and I had high hopes. Started out by running half of the large sheepy out on the daiwa 900 and dropped it around 600yds out. Came back and started catching whiting on shrimp and fishbites, one of them got cut into pretty big chunks and paddled them out into the second gut on my jig master 500. Once we were setup and relaxing the bait rod went down and I saw something go airborn in the 1st gut. I told my wife to reel it in and it gave her a pretty good fight, while she was bringing hers in my 500 went down and started bouncing. She driug hers on the beach and congrats to her first shark, a super spunky 30" bonnet head then mine hit the beach and it was a big sharpnose
So we put fresh bait on the 500 and I gave my wife a heart attack when she looked out and saw me paddling out to the second gut with my 2 year old between my legs "don't worry water was like glass and I had a life jacket on her" dropped that and came back. That one sat for 20 minutes and boom another large sharpnose
We'll now it was getting late so I took my 6/0 out with a hefty chunk of sheepshead and dropped it about 400 yds out. Once back I brought in the 900 and put a fresh sheepshead head on and took it back out to the 600 yd ball park. As I pull my yak back onto the beach I notice my 6/0 has slacked up, I hurry and try to get the 900 tightened up when the 6/0 start screaming! My heart stopped, that sound is one that once you have hear it you can never forget it. I let him run and was about to tighten up on him he dropped it and didn't come back :/ once we reeled everything up the bite marks indicated and fairly big shark probably in the 7' range. The 900 bait came in chewed to death by the little ones.
New day and a short trip planned we head down south of bob hall pier. I ran out another sheepshead head and put some whiting chunks in the 2nd gut. Let the bait soak for 2 1/2 hours and caught nothing but small whiting and one pomp. The big bait came back chewed up again and the whiting didn't get touched. I know there aren't any "real" sharks in this report but it was good time and just glad to be able to wet some lines again!

Water wasn't bad at all I think it's sitting around the 65 degree mark, lots of bait and fish. _________________ Bad fisherman blame their bait, or the lack there of. |

We had one decent wave that splashed over the front of the yak and soaked her, all I hear was wow, fun daddy fun. I have had her in the water since she was 3 months old so she has no hear at all when it comes to that. _________________ Bad fisherman blame their bait, or the lack there of. |

thanks for the report, but just FYI, that's not a good way to make friends....shark fishing off the jetty and taking up the end....I'm sure you got more than one or two stink-eyes from some of the folks there...probably a few "accidentally" crossed your line too....LOL

Actually I didn't take up much room at all. I had the kayak on the other side of the railing and the rod as we'll, only one line ran out I don't see the difference between that and a redfish rig? I was taking up WAY less space then everyone fishing for sheeps head and tossing them onto the pathway to lay there and bleed out with there big bulky pier carts. If they did accidentally cross my line it's no bother to me, 12 oz Heavy gauge wire surf weight isn't budging from someone pulling on it. Plus if you are going to look down on me for trying to fish just like you are then I don't care to be your friend anyway. Lol _________________ Bad fisherman blame their bait, or the lack there of. |

no, I hear you, there's all kinds of crazy activities that occur on the jetties, and a single long line isn't all that bad....
what I'm referring to is the "Bob Haul" mentality, where 4 shark fishermen and/or slide-liners take up the entire end of the pier with 20 rods to the point where no one else can fish the entire "T".....what has happened over the past couple of years is that the slide-liners got kicked off/moved from the pier to the jetties, and they'll put up 4-6 slidelines (8-12 rods) at the end of the jetty....what this does is basically preclude anyone else from fishing there effectively....
now, I know, "first come, first serve" and "don't look down on me for fishing this way".....and maybe I AM being a little biased because I don't fish that way....however when a few people clog up the end of a pier or jetty, and don't catch anything, while there's other kinds of fish blowing up but no one can get at them because of the clutter, it's frustrating.....
I'm "just saying", and good luck trying that this summer with boats buzzing around, snorkelers in the water in front of you, and 47 million people trying to catch redfish....its quite the zoo....
more power to you, good on you for the family outing, and go fish when you can....good luck out there, and again, Thanks for the report!

Couldn't agree more. It's dang near impossible to run baits off that jetty with all the traffic, especially the former high school heros on jetskis trying to impress girls half their age. But anyway, thanks for the report and it's good to see you getting your family out there and sharing the experience! _________________ "I never had an Easter, but I've always had a bunch of speakers" - Beardo |
