Hello everyone, I recently got stationed at NAS Corpus Christi, and am eager to start looking for places to do some wade fishing. I live on base so I only really know of Oso Bay where i'm told specks and redfish are waiting for me to catch them. Are there any other places around that I can try my luck?

Also, any advice on what brands of artificials and the colors that are likely to produce would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

By the base you could wade the dimmit pier area. Laguna shores rd. is very productive. The area next to the causeway where it exits to the Bluff.
As far as baits, soft plastics are always a good choice. Whatever you feel confident throwing. Good luck.

The long concrete pier out there can be good at times, and you don't have to wade. Years back, I saw many monster flounder come from the SE (windward) side, right next to the wall.

At times we caught reds, sand and speckled trout, black drum, tons of croakers and so forth, and this was on dead shrimp. I shudder to think what would have happened with live bait!!!

Good luck with whatever you choose! Wink

Thanks for the info guys! I fished around that pier last week and got a couple great sheepshead on crab. There are soo many nice spots on base to explore/fish, and i'm sure there are even more great places all around this area away from the base too!

Thanks again!

Look for Ray Crawfords book - places to wade and kayak in coastal bend.
He gives great directions on how to access the spots. Also pick up a hook n line map - I think Roys has both these items. That will usually lead you to a basket full of lures.

Wade spots
End of carribean st.
Bird island
Kates hole
Dead mans
Shamrock
Dimming pier

All within 30 minutes from you.

Oso is great but also has a soft mud bottom - might look at a kayak to further access the area.
Good luck and welcome to the area.

These are all good spots I'll say that for sure. Also keep in mind weather. Winter time is cyclic and with the fronts rolling in you'll have good and bad times to go. Try planing your trips with wind in mind; if your on a shoreline and the wind is blowing at it (windward) at 20-25 mph your in for a slow day, but if you try going out on the same shore line with light winds, some times that can crank up the action. I tend to fish the leeward shorline (wind blowing from land towards the shoreline your fishing), that way if the wind does get worse it don't disturb the shoreline so much. There will be less floating grass, better water clarity and it'll hold more fish (generally speaking).

I generally try fishing before the front comes by all means do it safely. Then wait until 2-3 days after the front has sizzled down and has swapped back to a SE wind.

I hope this helps and good luck out there!
