I wasn't trying to catch one but caught one anyway. I was fishing on the part of the south jetty at Port A. I caught a small perch and was lifting it out when a pelican jumped on it. The fish managed to get off the hook but the pelican was hooked. I managed to get the pelican to the bank and caught it. It tried to bite me a time or two but missed. It was hooked in the beak close to it's head. I don't know much about getting a hook out of a pelican and lucky for me and the bird I was close to the University of Texas Marine Science Institute so I took the pelican down there. A towel over the pelican's head seemed to calm it down. A nice lady there took the hook out while I held the bird and my wife held the beak open. We released the pelican and it flew away. Oh I also caught a 24 inch gafftop and had something break my 14 pound line.

Caught a seagull at Packary on Saturday morning. Bird got warpped up in my line during a cast (no hook involved, luckily). I managed to untangle it, a plastic bag over the head really calmed things down.

Probably the best catch of the day, besides my wifes 18" mullet on shrimp Shocked

We have something in common Cabrego. Catching seagull can be an exciting time! It's amazing how fast they can swoop down catch your bait! I'll have to remember to cover their head if it ever happens again.

Funny thing is that he the bird didn't even get close to the bait, it just managed to get my line warped around it's neck and wings. Luckily there was a plastic bag lying around that I made use of.

Blew up a seagull once, quite by accident.
I was fishing off Bob Hall and casting a 6/0 reel on a 553 Harrington with a 9oz weight. I got to the top of my cast and directly above my head was a seagull. I hit the bird with everything I had and it tore the thing apart. I felt terrible and the guys on the pier didn't let my live it down for a year.

I have snagged Gulls , Terns, and rescued a Pelican once or twice, and I have been snapped, and pecked, and to this day never I have never lost one drop of blood. Ya just got to hold them firmly. Now the Pelicans I was smart enough to keep their heads pointed away from my face. I think thats just a good practice for handling a bird that has a spear for a beak.

It's surprising just how small a pelican is when you're holding one. When I was carrying that one it would give me a look that said you're one ugly outfit and I'd bite your nose off if I had the chance. The next day I went back to the same spot and I can't be sure but I think the same pelican came back and was looking for another free meal.
