When I was south of Bob Hall on Weds. I saw what looked like a inflatable mattress lying on the beach at water's edge. Then, yesterday when we went SBH, we saw a police car parked by the "mattress", and now it was partially "deflated" and leaking red liquid [almost looked like blood] into the water. A few hours later on the way home, there were two trucks, a trailer marked "environmental cleanup" and several men working at the site, a few new sealed barrels, and a horrible smell.

Anyone know what the stuff was or hear anything about this?

My guess is a chemical storage bladder with who knows what inside.

Cudakilla wrote in response to the post about the off color water coming out of Packery channel: "We saw the same thing all the way up to the S jetty yesterday. Concentrated patches seemed almost red in color. Ruined what was otherwise really nice water. Up to a long ways you could see that they were patches that came and went. Mysteriously appeared from what was clear green water and moved around without being mixed with it. The wind eventually picked up and they get mixed a bit so that the whole shoreline then looked a brownish color. We caught quite a bit of whiting in the green water but as soon as the red patch showed up nothing. The fish would be at the edge and out of the red stuff."

I'm now wondering if the "red stuff" he is referring to came from the leaking chemical bladder we saw on the beach south of Bob Hall...or if there were multiple chemical bladders that were either dumped or lost off shore...and one washed ashore while the others were floating under the surface off shore...leaking red stuff into the water.

It was a wayward fuel bladder, that contained diesel fuel. I has since been cleaned up. So, no worries. Smile

That doesn't look like diesel. It looks like something soluble in water.

Maybe it is just the way the picture portrays it, but I agree it does not look oil based. I would figure it to be pretty evident to most ppl if it was gas or diesel....the smell alone would be a dead give away.
