| Has anyone modified their tunnels on the tunnel hull boat for increased fuel economy and more speed. I have a Explorer tunnel V and my fuel and speed is horrible. Really looking for better fuel economy. Any suggestions would help. |

| I have a Yamaha 200hp ox66. Actually my dad has a 22 ft stoner skiff with carb 200 Mercury that gets better milage and speed than my boat. |

Sorry if i hijack this thread but, I've thought about this a lot. Everyone always says how inefficient tunnel hulls are and how they rob hp. Don't know if would work on a tunnel v but I've thought about taking an old texas skiff or 18 Majak and putting a flat piece of reinforced composite (wood may be too weak but don't know) and attaching it to the bow end of the tunnel on a hinge and then putting hydraulics on the aft end. my idea would be to have a retractable tunnel. Put the pad down and have more aft planning surface, bow lift and less cavitation, pull it up and run skinny. Of course would need a long travel jack plate. Don't know if would work but I might try it. _________________ You should have been here yesterday, they were tearin' 'em up. |

200hp is about 130hp more than I like on a skinny boat. lol. Damn things are toooo heavy! But my definition of skinny is far from most ppls.
I like the idea of the other post. I'm sure Majek has tried it. |

| Interesting idea with the retracting panel. I wonder if glassing a panel over the tunnel at the back of the boat would allow the boat to run on the pad at plane but water would still flow through the tunnel at slower speeds. Or would it prove dangerous or simply rip off? |

sorry to say, you own a speed-robbing hull, I know, I've owned one and used several as work boats.....and while the OX66's are bullet-proof motors, they are not the best on fuel (I get 2.5 MPG out of mine, ouch!)
you could either go four-smoker, or try another hull.....
