So got the go ahead from the wife to go fishing out in corpus within the next couple of weeks for my birthday present. I know im whipped by the old lady, but its really expensive for me to drive out with the boat from san antonio. Really want to angle some reds, trout, snook, flounder and well, hell, anything i can take home and fry up. Got a little 14 foot jon boat and probably bring a army buddy along to try and limit out 2 people. Any ideAs on the better weekend within 3 or so weeks? Also last time i was out there i put in at NAS and didnt do any good at all. Not one keeper. Some pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Alex

You could put in at Billings or Packery Channel parking lot. Fish all around Packery Channel, posting up at all the spoil islands along the way and fishing the channel should be productive this time of the year. Just dont anchor or sit in or too close to the channel. Could be a zoo this time of year too around the actual bridge, thats why I mention the spoil islands to the west of the bridge and across from all the perty houses along the channel. Boat traffic seems to have gone way up just since last year. Also could hit Kates Hole, Deadmans and Aces. The grassy flats within sight of Dimmit Pier and Boat Hole area could be nice as well. This weekend looks okay, light wind, lowish tides and further away from full moon, but rain is still in forecast. Rain don't stay long and shouldn't deter as the overcast helps keep the beer colder for longer, but keep an eye out for lightning. Forecast further than that just aint reliable enough to tell yet. Actually just put a date on the 27th. Wife is gonna come too. Got a good trolling motor and always try not to anchor up in a spot when i can drift it and keep the traffic going. I usually go with live shrimp or gulp shrimp, been messing with gold spoons but no luck yet, usually use a 12lb monofillment with a 30lb leader and a kahle 1 eagle claw hook on a medium pole. Think thats an ok rig or should i start diversifying?

Look up carolina rig. Bait it with live mullet or shrimp, or cut bait, dead shrimp or fishbites. I usually use small piece of fishbites along with cut bait or dead shrimp. Your cast lasts longer that way. Could also use cork or lemon rig or free line shrimp. Try varying the size of the cutbait, and also reeling very slow along the bottom. I feel like this helps leave a scent trail as well as find fish. If the tide is not moving too fast. I've had decent luck with spoons, but only with skips and trout. Try several things while you're out there and just have fun. The most important thing is to keep the wife baited at all times and make sure she catches the best fish. Mine likes to go by Academy or Roys and pick out her own fishing accessories, makes it that much more fun for her. Whatever fish she catches, offer to take her picture with it. If those things all work out, you will have a great fishing partner and always be able to go. Beer makes things better if you're just fishing and not catching.
