After finally finding the reds middle of last week, I was anxious to find them again as my wife and two sons, and two of my sons' friends, joined me over the weekend. On Sat. morning, my youngest son and his friend decided to take a pass, so it was me, my older son, and his friend. We went to one of my regular spots to see what it had to offer, and within a couple of minutes, we had my son's friend on his first ever redfish.

It taped out at 22" and went on the stringer. (Editorial pause: yes, the photo is doctored. All 3 photos in this post have been altered to remove any identifying landmarks to protect the innocent fish.) My son was up next, and landed what I have been landing all summer before the middle of that week: a 19 incher. Hey, it was fun to catch. Up next was his friend again:

The result: a 23.5 incher. My son was up again, and landed two more, which measured in at 18 and 17 inches. Going the wrong direction, son. Back to my son's friend, and this time the reel was singing. This wasn't any 19 incher, that was obvious. I was trying to give him verbal instructions on when to reel and when not to reel, and the result was comedic - Reel! Don't reel! Reel! At one point he just looked at me like I was insane, which I probably was (temporarily I would like to think). Fortunately, the fish made it to the net, and taped out at 25.25 inches:

He was a pretty happy camper. We ended the trip with my son landing a 19.5 incher - so close. I was proud of my son, though, as he didn't get upset at the obvious injustice that had taken place, rather he was happy for his friend for having such a good first time saltwater fishing experience.

Next up was the fileting of the fish, and when I first offered up the head of a redfish to my son't friend, he wasn't too keen on touching it, but then I asked my son to come over next to me, and I just handed it to him. He's used to handling fish guts, so it was no big deal. I then looked at his friend with the all too familiar "I'm challenging your manhood" look, at which time his friend took the fish head from my son to prove he could do it. By this point, my younger son and his friend had joined us, so we had a veritable biology class going on - this is the heart, this is the stomach, etc. It was good to see them learn first hand that this is where food comes from, and that it ain't always in a pretty little package on the store shelf.

Of course, we went back the next day with all 4 boys, and didn't get a bite. Such is fishing. Can't wait to get back down for Labor Day!

Best report I've read in a while. Great stuff. Never pass up an opportunity to get the kids messy and teach em something. Way to go dad.

Good job dad, the impromptu biology lesson takes me way back to when I was a kid and dad would show me how to cut the stomach open to see what the fish was eating, so you had an idea what color and what type lure to throw the next day.
