Hi all,
I moved to Corpus about 3 weeks ago. I've done most of my duck hunting in the swamps of North Carolina, and now that Semptember is only a month away, I'm starting to get the itch. I must say, I haven't seen many swamps, so I'm left conclude that most of the ducks around here are on the big water? Not asking for GPS coordinates here, just a little guidance from he locals as to how to start setting my gear up. Thanks. |

Welcome to STX. The duck hunting here is good to very good and it is not like any where else I have hunted them.
1) There are few to no freshwater swamps marsh areas you can hunt. All that I have found are on private property. If it is marked stay out. Hunting the lagoon can be out of this world as long as you font mind Redheads. Lots and lots of Redheads. That said you can and will kill Black ducks Mottled ducks, teal, most of the grey ducks and Pintails.
2) If you have access to a boat put in around the causeway and head south. You will see the blinds when you get past the water treatment plant on the island. Check out Night Hawk Bay too. The blinds are there for a reason...... Read the entire regs on duck hunting in Texas and the section on blinds. The rules here are different but they do work well for the area.
3) Leave you mallard calls at home.
4) Buy a cheap shot gun you do not mind rusting. It is gonna rust I dont care how hard you try. So leave that Citori or Red Label at home.
5) There are lots of places to wade in. Look around the Church between Packery channel and Mustand ISland State park.
6) You will get checked by game wardens, often, so know the regs, bag limits, tags, stamps and hip certification.
Good luck! |

Drake,
Thanks for the info! I'll be dreaming out redheads and pintails for a month now! As far as the cheap shotgun: did I mention that I'm a Marine? I love my job, but Good Ol' Uncle Sam doesn't pay me enough to be able to hunt with a Citori!
You did confuse me about leaving the mallard calls at home. Do you mean to tell me Texans don't blast a mallard call as loud as possible no matter what's flying? Next thing you're going to tell me is there's no sky busting after deer season here either! |

Drake pretty much nailed it on the head on this one. Listen to stump also these guys know what there talking about! As for redheads and pintails they are definitely plentiful. I actually get sick of them for a bit but just remember we got the best readheads hunting around IMHO! _________________ Thanks Bubba |
