Had some good friends from out of state down for a few days fishing last week so we went to Yarbrough to try to find some better water. We waded through a slightly sticky bottom until we reached the hard sand towards the island and there were tailing black drum galore. We used spoon flies that are black on one side, gold on the other. Cast it out, let it sit and when a drum shows interest, give it a slight twitch - bam. Did a comparison taste test of grilled black drum versus redfish for the guests - drum wins every time.

I have caught more black drum there on the fly than I have in all the spots on any bait anywhere. Wind forecasts are not looking too bad right now either.

They aren't picky eaters, a well place fly well get them more times than none. #4s and smaller with small lead eyes or large bead chain tied in a dark color. I'll take a 16" drum over redfish all day, although the throats don't grill up quite as well. Might have to try them fried. _________________ Don Alcala - Roy's Bait and Tackle Fly guy

Agree with lack of fly preference, as long as you don't strip it.
