Made two trips, once Friday morning and today. Friday we went straight out to the 8 mile rig. We managed two limits of snapper, one sheep head and 6 huge sand trout. We also caught and released four sharks. Saw lots of kings being caught.

Today had pretty knarly chop and took a while to get to the rig. Caught quite a few small snapper. No kings, no keeper snapper, no ling . After only two sand trout we headed for the lone star reef. Made a few drifts with nothing to show except more small snapper and a ton of sharks. About 2:00 we decided to head home. Before leaving we were cleaning the boat of left over bait that acted like chum and brought up a beautiful Mahi. I have never seen one myself and have always wanted to catch one. I threw a speck rig and it instantly turned, hauled butt and slammed it! I had no idea they were so strong and fast. It screamed 1/4 of the spool in a few seconds. She jumped twice and it was awesome. Got her in the boat in about 15 minutes. MADE MY DAY FOR SURE!

Were you guys in a Dargel out at the Packery reef? Is that where you picked up the mahi? If so, we were in the blackjack making a few drifts there near the buoy. Pretty slow day of fishing today compared to yesterday.

If "packer reef" is the same reef as "lone star reef" than yep, that was us. That's a nice boat y'all got. To answer your question we were done fishing and drifted quite a distance away from the reef when she showed up. But we did see a couple more at the reef

nice dolphin.. but don't worry about STAR... it take a big bull to win...
they are fun fish, grow fast and if they're 30+ inches good eating.
never pass up a weedline or junk floating in open water... they love floating structure.
