Coming down June 14 to spend the day with my Dad. I'm on the fence about where to fish. Of the two choices which would you choose and why?

I'll throw in my two cents for you. That's 9 days away and you shouldn't make plans concrete that far in advance. Like many people on this site, I was born and raised in Corpus but now live in San Antonio. My brother down there keeps a constant eye on the wind and seas reports for us and it is still almost impossible to make plans further out than 3 or 4 days. We just tried and now I probably have two days off next week to play golf up here instead of fishing down there.

I fished lighthouse lakes today. It was slow. Caught a keeper red and two trout but it was a grind. All on topwaters. Went to that Jetty two weeks ago. Scattered spanish macks on both sides if you keep at it. Heard there were some trout in the channel also. Good luck.

I would probably choose Lighthouse Lakes. It's a nice place to explore and watch the sunrise. I've tried live and arti's and was never able to produce much both in the channel and in the lakes, but, for me, it was still a cool place to go and spend part of the day. Paddling to the lighthouse was a cool experience. Be sure to wear good foot protection because, as I recall, the shell is pretty tough in areas. You can also try Wilson's Cut and paddle out to Shamrock. I had better luck out there, but there have been break-ins.

I honestly believe that Lighthouse Lakes is one of the most beautiful little gems to kayak on the entire Gulf Coast, even after I've paddled around mangrove labyrinths in western Florida and the marshes of Louisiana (ducking now while others throw stones at me). I can't speak to the fishing - I've only been there half a dozen times over the years and have had decent luck with reds. But like grasscutter said, the sunrises/sets are gorgeous, so get out early and bring your camera. Maybe a good book on the shorebirds of Texas, if you're into that thing.
Oh yeah, and some topwaters and gold spoons. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |
