| Which do you all prefer and why? What applications do each hook work best in? Are there any times when either hook is a poor choice? |

Mostly circles....
Offshore for snapper you have to use circles when fishing with bait. For me its like this:
Bull reds/jacks off the jetties or beach fishing live mullet: circles
Sharks: circles, except for big big baits which I no longer really run...
Pomps/whiting fishing with shrimp and fishbites: baby circles
Most of my bait fishing is with circles... Can't beat getting them in the corner of the mouth and circle hooks are not as likely to straighten.
Hope this helps _________________ "I never had an Easter, but I've always had a bunch of speakers" - Beardo |

| I like circle hooks when surf fishing, or other bottom fishing. Fish pick up bait and set itself. J hooks if I fish shrimp under cork; which I can't remember the last time I did that. |

| Very useful info here, thanks. The reason I brought this up is I'm bringing my dad, fatherinlaw and brotherinlaw down Father's Day weekend to fish the north jetty at port a. I've already researched the jetty rigs and I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on tackle. When I use the three way swivel rig off the bottom, I will definitely use circle hooks. If I use a 3way swivel float rig I planned on using j hooks. |

| Oh, and since your fishing the jetties, look up lemon rigs. Easy to use and a great way to catch fish out there. |

The three way swivel rig is the same as the lemon rig right? Do I use circle hooks for the lemon rigs as well? |

| What size circle hooks should I use at the north jetty? I will mainly throw a floating lemon and occasional bottom rig |

For sheepshead, trout, reds and spanish, basically anything out there interested in your lemon rig, I like 2/0 circles, either Gamakatsu octopus circles, or vmc sport circles.
Maybe use a 3/0 if using a bait bigger than a shrimp or little finger mullet.
they are sharp and strong and inexpensive so you won't feel bad if you lose them in the rocks. I never had one straightened, even with bull reds. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

Ditto that pretty much on size, although big darn fish can be hooked and landed on amazingly small circle, evidenced by my 30 lb Wahoo last year on a 2/0 circle, right in the corner of the mouth.
Caught a 38" red on the same thing the year before but on my heavy butterfly jigging outfit. Even with the drag pretty darn tight (the fish was on deck in maybe one minute) the hook was in great shape, and right in the corner of the mouth! _________________ Dave
