Hi everyone! I will be heading to the coast around June 15 and had a few questions...mostly about boating. I'm not an experienced boater, having only driven a boat a few times. My plan had been to rent a boat at Rockport and head across the bay to the island or to some Oyster Reefs with two friends. The boat I was looking at renting is a 22' Blue Bay. I downloaded some very detailed nav charts. They seem to show a LOT of boating hazards besides the reefs...wrecks, pipes, piles, etc. Its hard to get a sense of scale from a nav chart, but is Aransas Bay really as dangerous as it looks? Since this will be my first time in the bay, I don't like the idea of drifting and would probably drop anchor. Tips for a first timer on this bay?

If it really is as bad as it seems to me, are there other bays for redfish and trout that are friendlier that I should look at?

Lastly is the question of bait. I've done lots of research, but I can't seem to figure out what the typical best baits are for June. I know that what the fish are eating is highly seasonal, so I'm wondering what it will be when I am there. It seems like croaker is a good bet, and live shrimp. Is that correct?

Check your emails. For some reason when pasting into a forum message from Microsoft Word, the message gets cut off at the point it comes across a comma, an apostrophe, hyphen, colon or semicolon. You have to manually delete and add them back in. I have no idea why this happens but it started several years ago. May have to do with new web protocols.

Depends on where you rent the boat. If you are renting from the marina at the Little Bay Bridge near Key Allegro the staff is pretty good about giving you directions to navigable water. Fish might or might not be in their areas of destinations and they are sort of picky about where they want you to take their boats, which you launch at their rental docks. It is fairly easy to get a compass heading from the guy(s) there and motor directly across the bay towards points East or so.
If you have an idea where you plan to rent and what type of boat, shoot me a Pm and I might be able to be a little more specific. Lots of water around the area where you can navigate but in most instances you do have to have an idea concerning navigation points to use/avoid and sometimes that includes getting into and out of fishable waters, example Estes Flats, Ransom Island, Mudd Island, et. al. Not that difficult if you have some maps or better yet, if they have gps on their rentals(which I do not believe the outfit at Little Bay has but not sure).

I used to run all over that bay in a boat and in a shrimp boat. Never had any problems. Even back Copano wasn't a problem. 99% of the time you always see the oyster reefs and obstructions way before you run up on them. Go have a good time just keep your eyes pointed over the bow in unfamiliar waters and you'll be fine.

go slow and keep your eyes open aransas is one of the easier bays to navigate in the area if its your first time pay the extra money and book a guide they are many in the area that can give you a good experience rather than pushing a boat off sandbars all day

good luck

X2

When you add up all the costs, the guide will not be much more.

My advice is to funnel the money you would pay to rent and fret and let a local guide worry about the hangups and put you on fish. It will be much more enjoyable for you and your crew.

I think your plan that you PM'ed me with will work just fine. About half he cost for a guide and you will be able to stay out as long as you want(at least until late in the PM). The areas you mentioned are all fairly easy to get to and what the heck if you have to jump out and push off a bar or two.....that is a good learning experience and at the time of year you will be on the water....a nice cooling experience!
Above all.....have fun! Cool Cool
