Ling used to be very common in April and May. Some of you may have seen this video before and if I recall on of our forum members used to come down to fish for ling every Easter at the Port Aransas Jetties. Maybe things are going back to the way they used to be!

At about 35 seconds in, the fish nearly gets revenge!!! That green lemonfish just about plants that gaff in his armpit. WOW!
Baby lemonfish are very abundant in the sargassum mats, so it stands to reason that the "Easter" influx ought to bring them in. |

| The old stuff is my father, the newer are me or my brothers. The big one weighed 90 pounds when he got it home several hours after catching it on the South Jetty......gutted and gilled while at the jetties. |

They are occasionally caught in CC Bay but they are not common.
I've talked about it here before but we actually used to have "Ling runs" on BHP and Horace Caldwell piers in April and May and many of us would target them soaking a big white squid on bottom. Sometimes the piers would be lined almost elbow to elbow with folks hoping for a Ling.

between the jetty rocks...I was maybe 9yrs old...trolling Hooties.. we got into a bunch inside the rocks...
chaos...
when you live in dry dirt, and you see all the water in the Gulf and fish jumping...well, we were sling Zebco's w/ Hooties and it was on.... _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

That's a sweet video! Interesting how they're all biting with a big moon...
I got this one a few years back in August, don't remember the moon phase though...

One of his brothers actually did the study on their dads old videos on moon phases and time of year fish were caught. He then called his older brother to tell him on a particular date that the moon and time should be right for catching one on the jetties. They took the trip and the brother who did not do the study actually caught one. The one that did the study was not happy that he did not actually catch the fish after all that work. LOL.
Surf54 maybe you should chime in and tell it like it happened |

| Way to go wallhanger!!! Share our family secret with everyone why don't you!!! Yes, my brother did research all the dates and came up with the fact that most were caught on mornings after a full or near full moon. 90% or better illumination. Ling come into the surf on bright nights so you can often catch them in the surf early in the a.m. or on piers or jetties as they are headed out to deeper water. Whether it's to feed or breed is the question I guess. I believe my brother believed it was to breed. The day we tested his theory, we went to the south jetty the morning after a full moon. I landed a keeper before he made his first cast. Was the first ling we had caught from the south jetty in years. He has not been back since.... LOL |

Our Dad stopped fishing the jetties in the 70's. We all got chastised for years since he figured the ling were still there and it was just that we all just didn't know our 'a*s from a hole in the ground' when it came to ling fishing.
I'd bet that pretty much every other person on this site has a dad that thinks the same thing no matter what fish you're targeting. I'd like to go back in time to the 60's and fish a day or two myself to see what I'd hook into. Can I use the term 'the good ole days' even though I never took part in it? |

Hey what are friends for.
My dad and i never fished the jetties much. We spent countless days and nights at the Oso. We would fish on top of the Oso bridge with lanterns tied to the guard rail. We'd hook a trout, reel the line till the rod was pointed at the water and then execute the highest flip of a fish youve ever seen. You just prayed those trout would clear the rail, lol. |

I've done that a few times when the monster surf trout were wearing it out at BHP. Pray, pray, pray that it stays hooked and does NOT go too far, all the way over the other side with the wind! _________________ Dave
