I never liked math but..mathematically speaking, 50% fewer dead fish is a great thing! _________________ The next epic report is currently in the past. |

That would be a "No" on whether the possession limit applies to the State like the Feds. It is specifically noted in the State Regs that it "does not apply to fish in the possession of or stored by a person at their residence". Then they go on to define a "residence", but long story short, you don't have to worry about what's in the freezer. |

that's not really the way it works.... it's only 50% less for the people that kept 10 fish. I'd guess 80% of people fishing weren't keeping 10 anyway. either they choose to release them, or they weren't catching 10 anyway. |

| Five is plenty...fishing to me represents a whole lot more than just how much you can throw in the cooler |

I know this has been hashed and re-hashed, but for me, it costs at least $750 in bait, gas and food just to get down to the coast to fish FOR A DAY. If you're telling me my possession limit just got cut in half, those fish just got even MORE expensive. And it darn sure guarantees I'm not spending $$$ on a guide. For those wo care, yes, for someone who only gets speckled trout four or five times a year, when I come down, I fish to fill the cooler. What they SHOULD do is something like set a bag limit based on your zip code-- it's on your driver's license AND your fishing license. Shouldn't be hard to manage it--those who live near the coast and can fish regularly have the 5 fish limit; those who live a certain number of miles inland have the 10 fish limit. I know it aint perfect, but darn it, I'm not threatening the fish population in my quarterly trips to the coast--keep yer durned paws out of my cooler! Bah. Sorry for ranting, but it already costs me an arm and a leg to take the family down there-- robbing me of another $200 or more in fillets just makes it that much harder to justify. _________________ Fish ON! |

That shall forever be known as, The "F@rt in Church Proposal"!!!
I feel for you Brother, but a zipcode based possession limit will go over much like the aforementioned title. You make a VERY valid argument based on $$$, but this particular issue has gone off the rails iin terms of logic, science, and general "warm-fuzzy-felliness". And that's a darn shame.

It's been my experience from up in the north country that if the limit reduction is successful they also must increase it at some point down the road. I've seen catch and release regs do really bad things to a fishery. Results are more smaller and more aggressive fish. It can be reckless to ignore sustainability in a fishery. We'll see more trout, that's for sure, but if their target isn't sustainable for the forage available, it will have lasting effects on the fish population in a very bad way for years to come. Once the forage is decimated, it's game over.
But then again, no one needs 30 trout in their freezer getting freezer burnt and wasted.
Oh, by the way, Lake Mathis is picking up now. I recorded a temp on a part of the lake at 68 degrees. They should be coming out of the woodwork any day now. But minnows are at $10.50 a dozen up here. The activity in the warmer parts of the lake were dramatic. _________________ if it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is |

this is one thing that is annoying to me. I don't understand the insinuated argument that because someone keeps a substantial number of fish that they don't get eaten. I keep a lot of fish, and my family eats a lot of fish. I can recall throwing out one bag of fish in the last 5 or 6 years, and it was only because the bag didn't seal, and it was freezer burned. We will eat fish 3 or 4 times a week if I have the fillets to do it....
it's a comment that gets thrown around a lot, and I think it's unwarranted 90% of the time. |

Yes but rooting around the freezer I have found a few fillets here and there that got lost in the shuffle. I store all of my fish in the manual defrost freezer now. The frost free in the refrigerator combo can be deadly. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |
