Made a very late start, but was encouraged by reports of clear water, light SE winds and low surf. Regretfully, the reports didn't include heavy sargassum weed concentrations all through Big Shell. Stopped first at a point at about MP 32, where I caught almost all of the 17 large whiting I kept. Had one nice pomp-like strike there, but one hook was pulled out of the snap. Catches later down the beach make me think that wasn't a pompano.

Made several other stops until turning around at near MP 42. Bites were much less frequent, and none were from pomps. Left my measuring boards at home, but one fish was a red at about 36", and another was a big ugly nearly a foot longer. Pretty tough hauls for the 1/0 thin wire circle hooks I use for pomps, but they hung in there, perhaps too well. Sprained a finger getting the big ugly released, but the hook looked fine afterwards.

Spoke with someone just after starting back. He said they'd caught 3 pomps, but no big red or black drums.

Water was barely off-color, but lots of weed in the first gut. Long rodding was okay in the second gut at the pinches and points. The weed may have been getting less persistent on the beach farther south. Driving in Big Shell was poor; looked the same as it did after the Cleanup.

Thanks for the report TH. I thought about going further south but the weather forecast was so far off I was a little unmotivated and came home early. The only thing the forecasts had right was the sun came up and it was Saturday.
