I know there is a fly fishing sub-forum here, but it (sadly?) rarely ever gets visited.

I am torn between what I should go with for a beach setup. Before I start, I have a TFO Mangrove 8wt that I use for the bays, while the presentation is awesome, the action is too slow for the surf's wind IMO.

I don't know if I should go with a 9wt or 10wt. I do know that I want an above average rod for this setup. Punching through the wind is a must. I have really been leaning towards a 10wt. But then again, I don't want to get a 10wt and end up using my 8wt more often...so should I get a 9wt? But if I get a 9wt, will it handle Jacks, Kings, and maybe Tarpon? And will it handle casting in the wind? I'll likely be putting a Kraken XLA 4 on whatever I end up getting.

I've been looking at the Xi3 series very hard. Maybe Motive if the Xi3 can't be justified enough.

Maybe Golla or Sandifer will pop in and answer...fat chance lol

I have a 10 wt Mangrove for jetty fishing. It isn't gonna have as much distance as an Xi3, but it fits my style of casting and works just fine in a stiff wind. For kings, jacks, and tarpon I would go with a 10. A 9 is undergunned for a lot of the tarpon out there.

Best all around surf rod made is a TFO 8wt / 9-foot TICR-X. Add a 2 piece conversion kit and its even better. Use a intermediate fly-line.

We'll pack a 10wt and a 12 wt along but hardly use them.

I think Billy would agree that an 8wt is all you really need in the surf.
Good luck,
Charlie

I've caught Jacks over 26 pounds on an 8 weight. An 8/9 is the all around rig. Tarpon require a 10 wt. but you don't get to use it much. As Charlie said, intermediate line and use line one size larger than the rod. As in use an 11 or 12 wt. line on a 10 wt. and a 9 or 10 wt. line on an 8/9 wt. rod. You can do that with intermediate lines. That will do the punching through the wind you require.

Well I went into iFly here in Houston planning on just buying some flies and I noticed they had a brand new TFO TiCr 8wt sitting on the rack...I'd heard good things about this rod and with it discontinued, I had to try her out.

At $125, I couldn't pass it up. I'll load my other spool with a 9wt intermediate and see how it holds up off the rocks.
