First of all! Thank you everyone thats sent text messages and called regarding my hip injury. Its still being treated but its getting better!

I spent most of February in Dallas but finally came back in time to make some baffin trips.

I made 4 trips last week to good ole baffin bay. The drum run was ON! In those 2 days my fishing company and I managed to land over 250 KEEPER black drum. Out of all these drum only 18 were over 18". Its the same all around baffin. You may hit a pod of 18"+ drum but 90% of the drum are 14-17". Out of all the drum I did manage one random Big Ugly.

It wasnt all drum those few days. We pulled out 6 Redfish with all being oversized. Most were around 32" the biggest went 36". I got the big gal when she was busting up large mullet. I caught a 6-7inch mullet in my net and put it on a ribbonfish rig. 1 j-hook and 2 trebles. It stayed by the kayak until the red busted again. I made my cast and swam the live mullet in front and BAM Hooked up!

I spent the weekend moving off the island and back into corpus. The move was a hassle but I knew good fishing would be waiting.

Thursday night I checked the weather and saw some good winds for a Baffin trip. I couldnt find anybody to go with me so it looked like a solo run. Lucky my buddy Tod shot me a text that he would be traveling down from san antonio around midnight to fish baffin with me. The last trip he made really didnt produce any fish so he was due for a heavy stringer.

We got to the launch a little late and it was still foggy. I had a good idea of where I wanted to fish but there was another location I thought would be holding and we only had enough low winds to hit one spot. I decided to stick with the original game plan and hit my old haunt...Jurassic Park.

We get to the spot and on my fifth cast I get slammed!

It feels heavy and I start to wiisper "please please please..trout trout trout".

That gorgeous silver flash hits the surface as the trout come up trying its best to shake me off! I start yelling at Tod "Big trout!". He rushes over just in time to see me land a awesome 28" Baffin beauty.

We were already talking about how it was a great day regardless if we caught anything else. We had no idea what would happen next.

I gave Tod the same lure I was throwing and told him where to cast it. I was still messing with my gear from the first trout when I hear his drag singing and a massive headshake followed by a "Its another big trout!".

His first cast in and Tod is hooked up with a monster! It starts running into structure so he has to lock it down and horse her in. The old gal doesnt like that so she is putting on one hell of a show. I paddle over as fast as possible and manage to net the beast quickly.

Right away I knew..."Thats a 30" Trout, Tod...."

He put her on the board and that tail hit the 30" mark!

She went 30" and hit 9lbs and change on a accurate digital. She doesnt look fat but I can tell you that she was thick with a HUGE gator head. BOTH of the trout were released quickly to keep on growing.

The trip was already a huge success and we were less than 10 casts into the day. The winds picked up and we had to paddle quickly to get to our next location. We bounced around a bit and set up on two different points. Around 1PM the bite and winds picked up. I was hitting drum on fishbites and tod was getting slot trout/ drum on shrimp. Just like the past 4 trips a school of bull reds came crashing through. I hooked up to one and dragged it to shore while 10 minutes later Tods lines start going. We both ended up with 31-32" bull reds.

By the end of the day we had some nice stringers put together. The drum were relentless. Out of a combined 50 (I hit 34, I know tod had at least 15) keeper drum only 6 were over the 18" mark.

We woke up and hit the ULM early this morning to do it all over again. The winds were relentless most of the day but we stayed and grinded it out. Live shrimp freelined worked for Tod as he super slammed Drum/Red/Trout/Flounder. I pulled quite a few trout on topwaters and the rip-n-slash.

We hit the cleaning station at 37 and got to work on getting the 2-day catch clean.

It has been AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME fishing lately. I cant wait for warmer weather to come around and stay! I love catching big trout but its always a blast to help someone get a personal best or even break into the 30" club! COngrats again, amigo!

Till Next Time
Life is Good!

Nice work! I miss Baffin. had to sell my yak because of a shoulder injury. those "structures" are a good place if you don't mind the paddle.

AT, you gave up your spot! I must agree the area you are fishing has produced some MONSTER trout and many, many heavy stringers. Good job on putting your buddy on the 30"!
Tightlines... no worries... that spot will stay secret... it has for many years.
