After a wonderful trip to Austin to visit family on Saturday, my wife and I sat in our San Antonio hotel room debating what to do Sunday when we got up. She wanted to go shopping and I wanted to do some fishing when we got home. After reading some reports of how slow fishing had been I thought that we might be staying in SA to do the shopping thing. We got a late start this morning and with a quick look at the PINS webcam we decided fishing and a relaxing afternoon at the beach would be the best way to spend the rest of the weekend. We get back to Corpus around 2 and quickly load up the truck and hit the road.

We get to our spot about 2.5 miles down the beach and get some fish bites out and quickly bang out some really nice whiting in the 15" range. I swear some were pushing 17". Molly was enjoying eating the discarded shrimp heads.

Silly dog

A little later we get a little better hit and my wife lands a 16" drum. Far from being big and ugly.

A few guys stopped by to see how the fishing was and they said they couldn't even lose their bait, wished us more good luck and they were on their way.

We bang out some more whiting with a few BIG hardheads mixed in. Then all of a sudden the new Avet SX with shrimp and fishbites starts singing. The rod is bending so good that my wife is having a hard time getting it out of the holder and I know its a good fish. She's fighting it like a champ!

She actually had a small crowd that happened to stop by as she was fighting it. A couple minutes later and she's got a big ugly sitting on the sand.

The beast taped out at 43 3/4" and my wife's personal best black drum from the surf. Once again out fished by my wife, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It also sure beats shopping in San Antonio all Sunday!

Sweet...she looks happy. I never got my lazy butt up today and I'm regretting it. The weather was awesome.

Nice report, that fish is the definition of a big ugly. On the contrary, thats a beautiful dog.

Oh man! Great catch. When do the drum start hitting the channels? Would like to plan a trip down soon for some heavy action. Sure looked like a fun catch. Congrats.
