Yesterday was way slower then expected. The birds in our honey hole did not want to decoy what so ever except for a single widgeon. So we moved around 9am to more open water and ended the day around 4pm with 6 redheads, 2 widgeon, 2 pintails and 5 buffleheads. Few birds short of our limits but still a decent hunt.
Had anyone seen any bands this year? Me and my hunting partner along with a couple extra people here and there have shot 211 ducks so far this season and not a single bad. _________________ Bad fisherman blame their bait, or the lack there of. |

| Bands are few and far between and becoming even fewer and further. USGF, DU and the Canadians are banding a lot fewer birds. |

I think these birds are getting blind shy. We noticed only the red heads would decoy and other birds would fly by scoping out the spread then buzz off. Its time to bursh up!! We killed 5 red heads on the laguna and two GWT off the lake. _________________ If you dont believe in god, you havent been to Texas. |

And call shy. Dont bother whistling at sprigs. They will put another 100' between them and the ground in about 2 seconds. If you get a group in range early you had better take them. They might buzz the decs twice if you lucky.
Good luck |

So just setting up a 30-40 decoy spread and sitting back should work? Im sorta new to duck hunting and would love any advise possible. I'm far from the best duck caller, but Ive got enough down to get them with in range. I have noticed just blowin the whistle once or twice has a better effect than the feeding growl. _________________ If you dont believe in god, you havent been to Texas. |

Some one will correct me on this and thats cool it's duck hunting. I still have a lot to learn about hunting down here. I still do most of my ducking at home with family. Everyone has an idea about what works but since ducks cant talk to us we dont know.
The only duck you will hear do the feeding call or clatter is a mallard hen. Usually when they are around a lot of other ducks and real comfortable. Mallard Drakes make a "Dweek" sound and soft raspy quack. Most grey ducks make a "deek" sound. And they do it in three's. Something like this, deek, pause and a quick deek, deek. Pintails, Widgeon and teal all tweet or whistle. I am sure they do make some sound but I havent heard a red head make a sound.
Down here I only use a pintail whistle. I can make the mallard drake noise (damn few and far between) and call pintails, teal (really respond to it) and widgeon. I use a buck gardner whistle becasue it was free. They all work well and you can get them for around 15 - 20 bucks. I saw one that was green and in a t shape. You could change the pitch by covering/uncovering holes on it. Seemed pretty simple and easy to use. I was taught to call to thier tail and thier wing tips. If they are coming at you keep your head down and stay silent. It was worked pretty well for 40 years so I am sticking to it.
Remember this late in the year ducks have had thier tails shot at for 4 - 5 months depending on where they started. You have got to be covered up. Your boat needs to be too. You have got to be still. If you are going to look up at them when they are coming at you have your face painted and take off the glasses. You might as well hold up a mirror. Most of the stupid ducks are dead....
Good luck. |

Thank you for the pointers! If their already headed my way I stay quiet and still. The birds that are flyin across or away from me I will hit the whistle in the 3 note rythem, sometimes 4. _________________ If you dont believe in god, you havent been to Texas. |

We'll ladies and gents the ducks are officially giving me the big F.U.
It has been really slow for us the past couple trips out. Limits of redheads and a straggler pintail or widgeon every now and then. Hunted more open water yesterday and got two redheads, two buffleheads and two black drum, you know it's slow when you bring your surf rod to the blind. _________________ Bad fisherman blame their bait, or the lack there of. |
