Hey guys, I've been looking around for a good offshore combo. I am almost completely new to offshore fishing, only been twice recently .
I found a good deal on a Penn Special Senator 6/0. Seems like a proven reel. I have been scouring the internet for reviews, but I'd like to hear what y'all have to say. Also looking for a good rod to pair it with.
Thanks! _________________ JJ |

| I have a 6/0 that I like a lot it does every thing I need it to.but some of the newer reels can probably do the same in a smaller package. |

I have also been looking at the 4/0's, just wasn't sure how they would hold
up against a big old king or something big... _________________ JJ |

| The 4/0 has probably caught more kings than any other reel.if I was going strictly for kings that is the way I would go. But the 6/0 gives you a little more if you hook a shark or big tarpon. |

i mostly fish offshore and run penn fierce spinning reels (5k,6k) and have 2 penn 320gts. only reason i got the 320's is because roys had a buy one get one. ive fought some good size fish with my set ups _________________ If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am. |

I also use my 320GT2 and my Abu 7000 offshore and it has handled plenty of Kings\Snapper\smaller Sharks etc. My 4/0 is a bit clunky offshore. Casting is more of a "lob" and I really just take it to drift Shark baits while I'm out there. A 4/0 to me is overkill and not much fun to reel fish like Kings and what not in on if you're wanting any sort of fight. I'm eyeballing the Avet MX for next years excursions.
Just my random thoughts based on what I use.

I have ran 4/0's for a long time. I have upgraded to the 4/0 wide for the shear reason of Tarpons! Beyond popular belief Texas is loaded with large tarpons. I have landed quite a few tarpons with the same 4/0wide and never had a malfunction. Been spooled once lost $100 worth of 100#power pro. (Monster tarpon btw lol). Caught more kings and sharks that I can count on it. Very good reel. But I now run 6/0wide with the tiburon frame. For that state record tarpon that is trailing 900yards of line from the time he spooled me lol. _________________ D. Askew |
