Looking for some experienced South Texas deer hunters to give me their thoughts on whether the rut has started, and if not, what is going to trigger it? I thought the last full moon and cold snap should have done it, but I haven't seen any sign in Duval County yet. What do y'all think?

It varies depending on what part of South Texas you are in. In the deeper parts i think this cold snap will kick it off strong. My buddy's ranch has had two nice bucks killed in the last week that were following does. Not pushing them hard though. My grandfather always said that once you get into December a good cold front with a little moisture will bring does into heat. Whether that is true or not I can't swear to be I always took anything he said as the gospel. As a rule i always pegged the peak from the 15th to the 25th in Duval and webb counties. Just my opinion though.

I hunt in Concepcion and it kicked off this past weekend. I think it will be even better this weekend but we will see.

Bucks have started moving more in the daytime, necks are swelling, does are being chased, etc. on my lease near Hebbronville. _________________ Why is it that these days sales people seem to be as honest as I am knowledgeable? |

weekend after thanksgiving I noticed some signs of the rut beginning in duval county, saw some doe chasing, lots of scrapes, and a buck that lost one side of his rack all the way to the base _________________

Hunted Cotulla afternoon of Dec. 6. Saw lots of deer. Bucks weren't interested in does, though. Did see some scrapes on secondary senderos.

The rut usually is in full swing in Deep South Texas in late December going into Christmas. Things should be heating up now
