Hey all,
I finally get to take some leave in June after recently returning from Iraq. My folks live on Padre so I visit quite often and do noting but fish when I am down there..... Anyways, my question is: Do you have Snook/Tarpon down there, and are they fairly easy to target? I was just wondering since I have always only fished for Specs and Reds and a little offshore everytime I visit and was looking to see if I could try to target something different. Thanks a ton and look forward to my vacation in my favorite U.S. fishing destination!!!!

They get caught down here, but don't seem easy to target. The reports of snook seemed to be getting better right up until the red tide hit last year. I saw some dead snook floating in the water at Packery Channel during the tide. Reports since then have been virtually nil. I don't know jack about tarpon, but see a few in reports - so they ARE here somewhere sometime. Just enjoy it down here while you can. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

Tarpon are pretty hard to target and could make for a boring trip , snook still arent very common except for lower coast but seem to be making a comeback , I was home in April from Iraq for R&R and decided to target topwater action and look for a big trout , I found some big reds on tops but not my trophy trout , had a damn good time though . Are you done over here or on R&R ??? _________________ I,d rather DIE while i,m living than LIVE while i,m dead

Got to head to South Padre for the snook - you'll find them in the same place as you do in Florida mostly around pilings in the channel similar to docks in Florida. However, I've been back to Texas from Florida for 8 years and have caught a handful of snook here vs. handful a day in Florida - I miss those line-siders nailing a top water at night around the docks near port canaveral. _________________

Most reports I have heard about snook say they are in the Brownsville ship channel during the winter and move into southbay during the summer (I think they said southbay) _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it. |

I caught a keeper 26" and a small one 18" in south bay last august , drifting grass mats throwing shiny skitterwalks , they are a blast to catch . _________________ I,d rather DIE while i,m living than LIVE while i,m dead

Glad your done , we got extended 3 months (that sux) , fishing the surf with BIG baits and BIG hooks is the norm for catching a shark , they are pretty common , if the weed allows it , throw lures in the surf for trout while waiting for a shark to take your bait , enjoy your trip and good luck. _________________ I,d rather DIE while i,m living than LIVE while i,m dead
