Went out fishing today and got skunked. What I saw were dead fish from JFK bridge south to just past Bird Island and over to the king ranch shoreline. The further south, the more dead fish I saw. The really strange thing is that they all appeared to be hardhead catfish. Anybody else see this or know what it is? I first thought maybe the cold did it, but why all catfish?

I just came in from fishing and also saw mainly dead catfish. We did see 2 dead mullet in the process. There is also a fairly good size Trout at my back dock. I don't know if it is also part of the kill.

We drove from KRS near Pita all the way to the Boat Hole and saw dead fish everywhere. Nevermind the fact that we didn't catch any keepers. Yesterday we got a 22 and 23" Black Drum and a 28" Trout. Nothing today.

Interesting that you mention that. Thursday night I saw several dead hardheads floating under the causeway. I'm curious to know what the cause is.

I saw 3 slowly dying hard heads in the meadows on Saturday. Their skin color looked like that of a trout that has been handled. Bluefish green

2 dead mullet in emmords on Friday.

fish that have been stunned by a cold snap usually die and sink to the bottom if the weather warms up as it has done this week the fish begin to decompose and float up about a week after the cold snap .I have seen this happen twice in the tropic isles canal system in the last few years this could be what we are seeing

During the fronts and after I saw lots of dead hardheads and struggling ones in the canals

TAMU records show that the water temperature at the Packery Channel came down to about 48 degrees F on Nov. 27-29th. You think this was cold enough to cause a fish kill? That was a little less than a week ago.

When I took my daughter duck hunting in the Backyard last Wednesday afternoon (day before Thanksgiving) the surface water temp on the flats was 49.

Did a quick internet search and I found an abundance of articles stating that a quick drop in temperature can sometimes lead to a fish kill. Seems to be the case here. Of course this is info found online and everything we read online is true right? Very Happy

Hard heads do not tolerate cold well. That's why they leave the bays in the winter and head out into the gulf. I'm sure the unseasonal drop in temperature is the culprit. We also noticed several dead hardheads last weekend from Yarborough up to Pita

I think about the only thing that can kill a hardhead is the cold. I'd bet a few dollars that's what it was...

A few years ago when there was a good die off of hard heads & they washed up on the beach south of port A jetties. A lady wrote into the paper that it must be from those winter Texas. They catch those fish & just throw them up on the sand. A few weeks later that whale washed up on the beach. Some one wrote in the paper asking how the winter Texas did that. There was no reply. Hey, I heard that it was Obama fault.
