I want to relate an experience that I had to PINS. 1st of all, I'm from Victoria and don't get down there very often maybe 3-4 times a years. I have always enjoyed it and everyone at the park has always been extremely friendly!

I was down at Padre Isle national seashore yesterday had my dog playing in the water. When I noticed the Park Rangers pass by me 3 times, each time I waved and all I received were stares. I knew they saw me and thought that was odd. I drank one beer while down there and they saw it on my Truck bed. Well when I left, I noticed that they turned around and got behind me, they followed me out, I stopped at the pavement bathroom and they hid behind the grass on the beach, I continued on and here they come again and ended pulling me over at the Visitor center for the old "you crossed the strip" reason. They searched the vehicle for guns/drugs, I did all their drunk tests and when it come time for the Breathalyzer, Ranger Spero and his "rookie" stoolie didn't give the opportunity to refuse but said that most people won't blow but said that it didn't matter anyways because the Breathalyzer wasn't admissible in Court anyways! Questions is, if it's not admissible then why give it??
Turns out though that I blew a .03 and they had to let me go, but I still felt like a criminal as they escorted me all the way out of the Park. They did write me a ticket for an open container that was in the vehicle which I had informed them that it was in there and knew I was at fault. But, I couldn't quite believe the treatment that I received as I was extremely honest with them and showed them the utmost respect! I was treated like a harden criminal, Not sure if Park rangers are held to a higher standard as that's how they acted!! I'm sure they harassed the other 4-5 vehicles that were in the 1st mile of beach as most were visible drinking also!
I was so shook up from the ordeal that I made two calls, one to my Lawyer and the other to cancel my condo reservations, all I wanted to do was go home! I have contacted the Park Super and he stated that he will get back with me on, we'll see!
I don't think I 'll be back for a long time and I'm relating this story to all of my friends/co-workers! Just wondering if this treatment is normal, if so, I feel sorry for everyone that uses this park regularly! Confused

Sadly this has become the "regular" from these guys! They are all on a power trip and would rather harass the regular joe than get off their A$$ and out of their truck and do what they are supposed to do down there! I'm on IR from the surf for a little while but as sad as it is that exact situation is always in the back of my mind going to and from the National Seashore! Sorry you had that happen as PINS really is an amazing place to spend the weekend!

yup... yer story has become very common...
I blame the eco-purists who run NPS and see Joe Taxpayer as the enemy and not their benefactors....
TPWD does SOOO much better at their parks.
too bad the State didn't end up with Malaquite to Mansfield.

like Bama stated, I'm sorry too that unfortunately this is becoming the "norm" with Park Rangers....they are evidently receiving NO FEEDBACK from local officials towards this type of behavior, so they'll continue it until someone says something....

this story needs to get out however, because it negatively affects the public's perception of the park, and in turn affects the local economy when 1) condo reservations get canceled and 2) your story gets out to co-workers and other folks who then will turn to other beaches or not come to the coastal bend at all...

thanks for sharing.....you did NOTHING wrong (besides the open container, tsk, tsk on that one, should know better), but at the end of the day you didn't deserve to be treated like that.....

Are you talking the little portable handheld breath testers? He's right, they are not admissible in court. It's used as a screening device.

The big bench top intoxilyzer is though.

What happened to you is the perfect example of too many officers and too little work. Wink

Pretty sad when a guy who has been registered with this site since 2006-- and only posted TWICE-- has his second post as something like this. It obviously shook him up enough to encourage him to post for the second time in over SEVEN YEARS. I honestly don't understand why park rangers

I can see them rangers in their office reading this forum laughing. Haha sucker got you. I can see them doing their law enforcement thing if you where making a fool of yourself, driving reckless or the cause of complains. The way they do it is out wright the abuse of power. It speak of the lack of professional maturity and common sense. It is a disease found in law enforcement called persecutions madness. On the other hand i would like to thank the game warden's i had contact with everyone of them treated me with respect and was help full with information.

you should have worn your "I love sea turtles" t shirt and learned the secret handshake taught by donna shaver...

once you guys get in line and realize the turtles are more important than tax payers usage of PINS (who fund a vast majority of research grants), life at PINS will be easier for you.

Was it a skinny bald dude with handlebar mustache???

I was leaving the beach yesterday when i saw a park ranger truck next to the dunes. I looked down at my speedo to make sure I was doing 15mph. as soon as he sees me coming he points his truck to me to shoot radar. Before I reach him he does a u turn and hauls supple bum to the pavement. I stop and dump my trash at the dumpster and head to the showers. when I see him parked in the grass shooting radar at me AGAIN.....

We get out to take showers and he stops behind my truck blocking me in. He then asks me the typical questions.....How long have you been down the beach.....How far did yall go...... did I see any one else....... and who did I see down there......

After we shower, we head on out and guess who we see shooting radar at us for the third time in 20 min???? the same dumb ranger once again looking to nail us and a reason to harass ans search us.... Evil or Very Mad

I never set my containers where they can see what I am drinking and I always expect to get stopped on the way out. They never are around when you really need them and you never see them address issues, they just drive by them.

When your in law enforcement and you say they are out of control.... it's bad! Not going to change though, from what I have seen it is a bunch of 20 somethings who just got their first police car. They should, but don't know any better. They have no life experience what so ever from what I can tell. Just my opinion.
