Headed to the North Packery Jetty this morning. Lots of bait in the water, some weed and a calmer sea overall. I had live mullet and fished the end of the Jetty. No reds were caught. The sun didn't hardly shine and most of the fish caught were Mack's and large Croaker. I started the day having forgotten my weights, my aerator broke, and my water shoes fell apart. Not to mention one of the rods I brought had a new spool of line (300 yards) which was trash. I quickly learned after having two good bites that the line was frayed every 3 feet to so. Total waste of about 12$. My big 10 foot rod broke the other day and my replacement won't be in for a few more days. However by 9:30 I had 4 live mullet and one spider weight left and I was using my Siena 4000 with 12 Trilene XT Extra Tough (150 yards). I cast into the channel and let my line drift about 40 yards. About 5 minutes later I snagged a fish that started running and I never turned him around. He took about 90 yards his first run. I could see the spool coming to an end. He stopped with just enough time for me to real in about 10 feet of line before his second run popped my line before the spool ran out. I was REALLY DISSAPOINTED.

I don't understand what else I need to do? The Siena 4000 only spools 150 yards. Should I be using a different brand or line strength? I normally do bay fishing and the tackle I have isn't as heavy as those who surf fish regularly. Any suggestions?

i have been in your same shoes once before. im a huge fan of the penn fierce line. for jetty and pier fishing i would recommend the 5000. spool it up with some power pro 20 or 30lb and it will hold 300 yards. They can be picked up at walmart for about 70$. i currently have 4 fierce reels and have fought some pretty good size kings, jacks and sharks with my 5000 and 6000.

Don't skimp on line!!!

Of all your fishing investments, your line is the most important IMO and I can't stress that enough. You will loose $$$ in tackle which eventually outweighs the line cost. It doesn't matter if you have a million dollar rod n reel if your line is breaking. The lost fish are priceless!

My mantra... "I don't mind loosing tackle, I HATE loosing fish!"

I like Power Pro personally with a topsot of their superbraid. Takes a lot of abuse.... Until ceejkay runs over it!!

For the jetty, try Ande Backcountry. Best I have found to hold up out there if you want to stick with mono.

You can't go wrong with investing in some good old fashion Penn baitcasters. Their 209m holds over 300yds of 20lb mono and their 309m is the same with 30lb mono. They are flawless reels and perform excellently in the bay and surf. You can pick them up at walmart for around $50-$60 or at pawn shops for less.

Braid, Braid, braid!!!

The beauty about braid is that it gives you the line capaciity of big reels with small spools and couple that with a flurocarbon leader of your choice, you are likely catching more, and bigger fish.

Personally i use 4000 Sahara's/Battles's with yellow Fins 20lb windtamer with 25lb, 30lb, or 40lb flurocarbon leader. I would also recommend using circle hooks that not only improve your catch rate but also prevents gut hooking fish as well. The trick with circle hooks though is to not set the hook, which is probably the hardest thing to get used to.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Size up or set drag on exterminate with pliers. Gear up for Jetty or Surf fishing.
