I understand the concept of potlickers and have an understanding of someone else's space...but it seems like you don't even have to be on the water to be a potlicker. I learned this a few days ago.....made a post about shamrock cove and asked about things to watch out for. Since I am new to boating and the area, I have ventured off into the bays without any true knowledge of shallows, reefs and other dangers that are out there.
Out of 220 hits on that post I had no repsonse.............so the conclusion I made......there must be some good fishing in that area....
I got a map, gps and depth finder...... I pay attention to other boats in the area but more so to learn where I should be and where I shouldn't........Safety comes first for me.....and second an ice chest full of fish!!! _________________ Life ain't right...until your fishing!!! |

For ever stirring the pot, that one.
You have your pot lickers, and your pot stirrers.
We're running out of pots for them all. _________________ JJ |

"Big ol' lazy dog".
I bet that describes most of us in one way or another. But seriously, I appreciate the digging up of this. I've not heard this story and it was told brilliantly. |

Hi, my name is Steve and I am a potlicker.
When we first arrived in Texas, I knew nothing of saltwater fishing. Susie and I fished every day and we soon became beach friends with Tyler. I remember seeing him fishing for trout in the surf and walking out to within 10 feet of him and tossing lures. The intent was not to steal his spot, but to learn how to surf fish. He was more than gracious, teaching me where to cast my lure relative to the gut, but also how to 'walk the dog.'
I learned a lot from Tyler over the next several months, as well as other friends such as Tarzan, Hardhead, Artie, Flakman and many others.
When I am able to return to surf fishing, and I hope that is within a couple months, I invite novice newbies to potlick me so I can pay it forward.

| i guess i am different. we pier fish and many times have people who come to where we are as they know that most times we will catch fish. we have fished the galveston pier since we were kids. because we all have to pay to fish on piers i dont complain i do teach others who come sit with us that come from out of town or who have never fished in salt water how to catch some fish. its a great joy to see a person face light up with their first speckled trout or to see a kid catch his first be it a very small one. we are all teachers. and yes my husband and i have gather around spots on the pier where others may be but we dont throw our lines over them nor are we rude. people enjoy fishing with us cause we make it fun for them. there is no sense getting upset for life is too short fishing is supposed to be a relaxing sport. we come to corpus to bob hall many times and have always been met by nice kind people with a few exceptions. looking forward to many more good times fishing |

I can't believe I forgot Nick. He taught casting lessons in a park on the south side, and I am able to toss my weight over 450 feet. I bought his Pendulum Cast DVD and will purchase his Backcast DVD when I return to fishing. He also taught me reading the surf, oh my, I hope I am not forgetting others. I've not been able to practice the cast from the DVD.
I am a former fisherman and a current caregiver, looking forward to returning to the surf. |

The only one that really astounded me was a boatload of guys in a Grady White while we were fishing the PA Fish Sanctuary this summer.
We were on the anchor fishing the bottom. These guys while running baits on downriggers passed us up one side and down the other then circled us twice before heading off to the anchored ships out of PA.
On the second pass I could have touched them with a rod tip. Not a one of them answered our demands to back the hell off or even looked at us.
Did they really think a 21' fishing boat was holding fish? So much so that they came miles out to us to check? It was the middle of the week and we were the only two boats out there.
It honestly gave me the creeps and I still wonder what the hell they thought they were doing. |
