I know nothing of shark fishing other than those fishing for them are thankful for the baits I catch while attempting to catch trout.

In attempt to learn about shark fishing here and there, my question is this:

What purpose or what is reasoning for putting what looks like electrical tape around shaft of hook. I assume it has something to do with the line attached to the hook, but I do not know.

From what I understand it's like a baby spoon effect.
Chopping on metal hurts therefor causing more thrashing.
So the hook is wrapped.
I'm no shark expert by anymeans though so I could be wrong?

From my understanding metal hooks leave a trace that can be picked up by sharks. The electrical tape is suppose to help conceal the trace. I have fished with taped hooks and hooks without tape and have landed nice sharks with both. It's more than likely a preference thing.

That's pretty much it. They can pick up electrical current caused by the metal in salt water. From my experience it doesn't make much difference.

Some do it and others dont. You have to wonder what bothers the fish more, the so called current or the smelly electrical tape.

It's a waste of expensive electrical tape and time.

In fact, I am of the opinion that the shark can smell the plasticizers and pthalates that are added to the electrical tape to give it elasticity. The adhesive on the tape is another mix of fine industrial solvents that give off the most wonderful plastic aroma.

Electrical tape doesn't smell like food.

And this nonsense of hiding an electrical or magnetic signal is bogus too. My magnets still produce a magnetic field through a variety of materials and the hook point nor hook eye is covered in tape either so you can't claim electrical current insulation either.

The metal releases a weak electrical signal as it slowly corrodes in the water. By wrapping the exposed metal this is vastly reduced. The signal coming off an unwrapped hook and leader creates a relatively strong signal that the sharks are startled by. Keep in mind sharks can detect the weak electrical signal put out by the nerves firing in a fish submerged under inches of substrate. I figure every bit helps with the odds. Plus, when I was fishing with my shark fishing club in Jacksonville I was the only one that wrapped my hooks and used coated traces. What were the results over 1 year? Every trip I left with a 6 foot plus shark, and the rest were helping me land it and later reeling in their untouched baits. It is basically like using the lightest possible terminal tackle you can, every little bit I can do to increase my odds.

Preach it, brother. Good seeing you and your new addition. And congrats to your brother

My grandfather, who spent decades shark fishing, swore by soaking his hooks in tobacco juice. He treated his line, (the old flat dacron stuff) with floor wax. didn't hurt his catch ratios any.

He also told me stories of sharks eating the trash they threw off the back of his destroyer, cans and all.

The shark will eat if it wants to, it won't if it doesn't and all the rigamarole in the world won't change that

What difference does it make what they put on their hooks if thats what they like to do. It gets covered with a chunk of bait anyhow. If I was going to cover a hook I would find some real flexable shrink wrap but I don't mess with it. They could cover their hooks with dodo for all I care, big deal.

Perhaps we could have a shark tournament with teams using either taped or non-taped hooks
