Son, Bryan, friend Donna, her daughter Abby and friend Annelise , AND Special Guest - Charlie Golla headed out Wednesday in 2 to 3 foot seas. After a 3hr run we started fishing for Sharpnose sharks ( not my cup of tea mainly because I don't like eating them ). The current was really squirrely. Anchored up, the current took our lines toward the bow and under the boat off the starboard and port sides! There were only 23 folks on board but the current soon had lines tangled everywhere so Bryan and I sat out that mess and waited to hit the snapper. The current remained a problem the rest of the trip but Captain Keith Schoolcraft did put us on a limit of nice snapper.
Here's Donna with her limit.
We tried for vermillion snapper and each landed a couple but with 12 ounce weights and 230 feet of water the slow bite made me realize I wasn't that mad at them
It was good fun and we all came home with fish.

It was fun being off shore again. Great trip with great folks.
My two red snapper weighed 10 & 12 pounds and will make for some good eating. Haven't had fresh snapper in over 10-years so it's going to be a real treat.
Thanks again,
Charlie |

Nice report Tyler. Can't recall the last time I had snapper but I do know it wasn't caught by me. |

Good report, wish I could have gone!
I have a question though. Do they "bleed" those sharks after you catch them? I'm not a shark fisherman but have always heard your supposed bleed them right after you catch them. Just curious... |

No they don't and the deal with Atlantic Sharpnose is that they ALL come in smelling like urea.
When we keep a small shark on the beach we first bring it in as "green" as we can. If it already smells like "ammonia, urea or pee" it's too late. If you get one that doesn't smell like that and want to eat it, it helps to cut the tail off asap and gut it and remove that dark matter along where the backbone would be if it had a backbone.
About ten years ago Skipper got a 4 foot bull this way at Flak's camp in Matagorda when some Brits were visiting and fishing. It was probably one of the best shark I've eaten. The grilled shark was a bigger hit than the fried fish. |

Looks like a nice day on the water with family and friends. Too bad about the weird current tangling the lines. |

Thanks Tyler! That's about what I thought you were supposed to do. I going to try one the next time I can do all that correctly. That's a shame they keep those sharks when they probably aren't going to be fit to eat! |
