Go by Breakaway Tackle on Roddfield and talk with Nick. Hes extremely knowledgeable and has everything you need. He set me up. His customer support is the best as well.

Freelining live bait. Use 20-30lbs braid attached to a 25-40lbs fluorocarbon leader using a uni-to-uni knot and than tie on a circle hook for better hook up rates. The fish are attracted to the jetties because of the rock structure so there is no need to try to cast to the middle of the channel or out into the surf. The fish will be IN THE ROCKS!

Port A jetties tend to have bigger fish and are not nearly as crowded as packery. Even though more people might go to port a, the size of the jettie spreads out most of them so you can fish in peace. Just my .02

I don't know how often you fish the jetties, But if your new and not sure your going to like it or not. I would not go to high rigs. I use a Daiwa Sealine SHA 30 & 50. purchased from Charkbait.com for $109.00 plus free mono line and free shipping and with quick delivery. Check the site out. and put on Ugly Stick from Academy for 69.00 plus tax. These rigs are about mid level and will last a long time if you take care of them. I also use a Avet SX on a Ugly Stick but they are around 159.00 plus tax. I think Roy's has them for the same price or close.
Good Luck and enjoy.

I've been told I'm just a bait fisherman so don't take my word on it Wink - but if you want to try your hand at lures, give this a shot. A few others may have more/better advice (becky, will sanchez, skillzzz, tyler, all come to mind...)

Spinning rod, medium action. Could go medium-light, but its nice to have some backbone for hoisting fish onto the rocks. 4000 class reel (ex Penn 4400, any shimano 4000). 30 or 40 pound braid with 20 or 30 pound flourocarbon leader. You could get the whole shebang for less than 150 bucks.

my jetty lure box:

Gotcha plugs
Silver spoon
3/4 oz cordell jigging spoon, silver and gold- good for when the fish are deeper, sinks fast, casts a country mile
castmaster jigging spoon - same deal as cordell spoon
Super spook or zara spook for chuckin in the surf early morning.
1/4 or 3/8 oz jigheads with gulp shrimp or swimming mullet
3 inch or 4 inch storm shad swim baits
silver rattle trap
Good ole Rebel jointed minnow

have a few short black wire leaders in case the toothy guys are out there

Lemon rig and live bait for the win.
