Going to start duck hunting this year for the first time in south Texas. Bought a dozen pintail decoys yesterday but was wondering what other type would work well here? I have not seen many mallards in the ULM so I held off buying any those. Any advise would greatly appreciated.

Get 2 dozen redhead decoys. Redheads are the predominat duck on the ULM.

What razorback said. But I would get three dozen cheap reds and mix in the pintails.

Don't bother with mallards. I have seen two and they were on freshwater pond in the bluff off of Yorktown.

I bought the duck picker by duck commander. With that being said I think divers don't respond to good to calls but do to decoys. Such as readheads. The other type is dabblers these do respond to calling such as mallards. Some one correct me if I'm wrong. Also is it bad to call for readheads?

Get a whistle call. Primos has a simple one named, "the high roller". It'll be about the only one you'll need other than a teal call around here. It'll cover a variety of ducks down here.

In the bays Redheads with some Pintail like the others said, scatter in whatever cheap plain brown (hen) dekes you can find at garage sales, etc.

As for the calls, just kick back and wait. Unless you're good you'll cause more harm than good calling at Redheads and Pintail in the bays. I've got a wide variety of calls with some high dollar ones from years ago and I rarely even take them out of my pocket in the bays.

edit: You guys seen any Teal down there? I haven't gotten out to battle the skeeters for Teal in quite some time... thinking about making a mid-week trip this week.

Pintails and bluebills for the white on the drakes. Birds can see them further off. Try to mix in redheads also and whatever other ducks your seeing in the area.
